832377 2009-11-22 03:11:00 smokers are entitled to warranty as are drinkers. But when you start spilling your drink over your computer it soon voids it. From what I read it had nothing to do with the fact that the owner is a smoker, it boiled down to the fact that the internals were smoked damaged (correct me if I read that wrong).
Much the same as your new car warranty would be void if your engine over heated and siezed because the radiator was split from a stone.
EDIT..

Would PCtech or wainuitech be honouring the warranty in the same circumstances where the damage was caused by the user?

Oh well, fair enough, I hadn't thought about it that way!

832379 2009-11-22 03:53:00 If anyone reads the link at the beginning of that article, or here (consumerist.com)there are many comments at the bottom - I only read the first page ( of 77) but they ring true. You can always tell if a PC has been in a smokers place, one of the replies shows some Pictures of clogged up cooling fans.

As for the warranty -- Well the manufactures warranty (in brief) covers the component in case of failure under normal working conditions.Page 2 post1 basically covers it -
Damage due to accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or
maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider),
unauthorized modification, improper environment (including lack of proper
temperature or humidity), unusual physical or electrical stress or interference, failure or
fluctuation of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, or acts of God; substitute Apple with other manufacture of component.

Each Case would be different, and looked at as individual. Some PC's I've open are disgusting inside. Theres been one I refused to work on, it just about made me puke with the stink inside.

IF the component fails under normal working conditions, it is replaced, that's where it can become tricky - sometimes when fans get clogged up they will fail, IF I Were to send back a fan caked in crap ( Tar) I know right now it would be refused.

Other sealed components like a Hard Drive shouldn't be affected, as they are in a sealed unit, thats why theres a label on every HDD, words to the effect of "break seal voids warranty".

One thing that does happen abit, is power surges causing damage - the warranty does not cover a power problem so if you have a surge and it blows the PC you are not covered, thats why its wise to have even a basic surge protector. Look on any of the appliances at Harvey Norman, and there are now stickers saying warranty not covered by power problems, (or words meaning the same).

For a PC to become clogged up badly, there would be a smoking or dusty house/room cased by something - cat and dog hair are the worst, take a look at most peoples places that have cats and dogs inside and the cooling inlets are covered in hair. Our own PC's here (in the House) get blown / cleaned out twice, sometimes three times a year for this reason.

Different types of flooring will cause more or less dust / dirt as well. Take a PC thats up off the floor, say on the desk, it wont get so clogged up as one thats on the floor. Simply lifting a PC off the floor several inches can have a huge affect on dust build up.

And whats the two biggest killers of a PC ??

Over Heating or Power related problems.

832380 2009-11-22 05:12:00 Yeah I've had several PC's overheat due to buildup of smoking-related-crap inside a PC. Warranty-be-gone, can't send it back like that to the manufacturer, it's the customers fault unfortunately :( Chilling_Silence (9)

No.
However.
Do you know how long it takes for smoking round your PC takes to build up enough crud to damage it? It would be long, long past the warranty.

The worst filth I have seen on a PC was in the home of one of those filthy old guys. Absolute filth and rubbish everywhere.
He smoked round it but the main culprit was the leaky coal fire. He cooked on it too, so it was a mixture of fat, tar and coal dust.
His internal modem had died. The encrusted motherboard etc was still going just fine.
His previously white monitor, keyboard and mouse which were now an extremely dark brown - almost black, were just fine.

The PC was as old as the hills and running Win ME.

So get real.

832382 2009-11-22 16:08:00 I find it hard to understand that in these enlightened years some people still smoke indoors.

The only times I've ever smoked inside is when I've been on hold for a half hour or so waiting for a helpdesk operator to answer the phone.

832383 2009-11-25 00:43:00 I refuse - even at this enlightened age - to let my computer smoke. I have enough troubles getting Linux to run, why stunt my poor 'puter's brain by letting it smoke SurferJoe46 (51)
832384 2009-11-25 01:07:00 Didnt know people still smoked indoors even seen maoris sitting outside step smoking around here.
Does not take much smoking to wreck cars interior haver seen behind calendar in pub would make you sick seeing change in colour of paint.

832385 2009-11-26 10:56:00 If you ever had to fix a PC that had been used by a smoker, you'd want to void their warranty so you didn't have to fix it either.

The disgusting smell gets all over your hands and screwdriver... :yuck:

Not to mention it's efficient at killing hardware and a right mission to clean off...

832386 2009-11-26 11:10:00 Nonetheless, I feel that if a company are going to
exclude smokers from warranty claims, this fact should
be advertised.
(Doesn't really concern me personally, as I don't smoke).
