1118927 2010-07-15 04:51:00 in relation to this thread (pressf1.co.nz) i posted ages ago, i went to Etc Computers in New Lynn, Auckland, with the original drive, and asked them to match it, not in capacity but whether or not it will fit. They gave me a Samsung HM160HI 2.5" SATA drive. I brought it home, and found it does not fit. The orignial drive is a seagate ST9120821AS it does say serial at disc drive, which correct me is an IDE drive. (see images attached) Whats the best drive to get? aidanmaz (7180)
1118928 2010-07-15 05:13:00 From the images it looks like the first and 3rd is a SATA? I cannot see the pins accurately.

IDE in my experience has been like a std IDE HD for the PC. Like 20 or so pins.
SATA - not seen off a laptop yet. I heard they are the same connectors as a PC's SATA.

They are, I've connected one to a desktop before, when it was full of malware

1118931 2010-07-15 05:22:00 hang on, so your saying both drives are SATA? If so why does the new one not fit? aidanmaz (7180)
1118932 2010-07-15 05:25:00 Fit.
3.5" or 2.5". Desktop or laptop.

Then:

IDE or SATA.

Thats the only 2 things that matter really as far as physical dimensions and connections go.

As for brand which has no relevance to the fit problem, I tend to stick with Western Digital or Seagate.

So what are you looking for? IDE? SATA? 2.5" or 3.5"?

1118933 2010-07-15 05:25:00 Do you still have the old drive? I know some compaq laptops have an adaptor fitted to the sata drive so it can be simply dropped in, no pulling and tugging. All you'd need to do is remove the adaptor from the old drive and put it in the new drive.

Your photos are a bit too blurry and not at the right angle for me to see if this is the case, but is the old drive the first photo? And does the 3rd picture (I assume your new drive) have the same looking connectors as the new drive? It looks like the adaptor is fitted to the old drive...

1118934 2010-07-15 06:07:00 Did you read my post in the old thread?
These machines have a connector, take it off the old one
and put it on the new one...job done!
This is a picture of it.
