832407 2009-11-22 06:05:00 For dinner tonight we had "J" Gurnard. The fish shop in Northcote was selling both gurnard and "J" gurnard, which we had seen before but were unsure of the difference. The seller (probably Korean), when queried, eventually said that the "J" gurnard is more oily, but could not respond much more as his English limited. We enjoyed the fish (which is cheaper), found it firmer.

Has anyone else tried this. What does the "J" stand for ? We have only come across it in Northcote. :stare:

832411 2009-11-22 06:27:00 What does the "J" stand for ?It's the Health & Safety Hygiene rating. :D

They are just being upfront with the fact that lot of fish sat outside for three days before they noticed the delivery. ;)

That doesn't explain the firmness of the fish... :xmouth:

The J is Japanese gurnard. Cheaper and slightly more oily than the normal South sea gurnard that we get here. Same species, different though. We have had it in Taupo at pak n save. Personally I prefer the normal south pacific one.

832415 2009-11-22 07:52:00 So "J" Gurnard is a bit like Chinese Whitebait?

Just some other non mentionable crap that someone is trying to sell by "implying" that it is something that it is not? :( :(

Pretty tough you are Zippety ! For instance there are very different types of mushrooms, mussels or oysters, so why not of gurnard ?
