832593 2009-11-22 20:27:00 Hi Guys

I was just wondering if any of you send stuff to the UK regularly ?

I may be doing this soon, and I get the feeling (rumours only) that it costs more to send an item to the UK than to send the same item from the UK to NZ.

Any comments ?

Also NZ post has a strange pricing policy.

There is no no longer any of the old "sea mail" (OK I accept that)

But they have 2 rates for air post
Fast gets there in 3 to 10 days (OK sounds good)
Slow gets there in 10 to 25 days (what ?)

Now slow is cheaper as you would expect, but how can you send something on an airplane and ask that it goes slow ? I could accept a one or two day slowerness (a good word) but 14 days slower ? Surely there are Air NZ planes to the UK daily or at least every few days ?

Kind Regards

832594 2009-11-22 21:14:00 As I understand it.....There is 1st class airmail, blue, & Economy airmail, green.

1st class goes on th the plane first & if there is room the Economy fills up the space.

In the UK they DO have two classes of land mail. The 1st class gets delivered as soon as poss, our blue sticker. Our green is the same as their 2nd class & gets delivered when the posty gets around to it. PJ

832595 2009-11-22 22:13:00 I'm not entirely sure about the UK to NZ rates, but I posted a small parcel to the UK before the Economy post (before Christmas) closed. It cost around $7.50 to post. There is still time to send parcels and by the grace of UK posties they will get there before Christmas, but it is at the higher postage rate. According to my UK friend the posties are/were on strike, but not all of them!! Don't even ask me to explain how or why, they probably don't even know, themselves.

BTW, some companies will send their products for you and deduct the GST.

832596 2009-11-22 23:10:00 I just looked at my NZ Christmas postal closing dates and the last date for the Economy rate to the UK is today (23rd Nov) and the Standard International rate is 30 Nov. There are other rates for International Economy and Express Courier in December.

832597 2009-11-22 23:36:00 Using these price finders may give an indication:

sg.royalmail.com

www.nzpost.co.nz

When I have bought heavy books from the UK, Chums Annuals weighing 2.5Kg, via ebay, I've always opted for surface mail which can take up to 3 months, but the price has varied enormously for some unknown reason, like GB pounds 12 to 22.

832598 2009-11-23 00:16:00 to send a 1 kg letter to gitmo is only 17 pounds or so :p GameJunkie (72)
832599 2009-11-23 01:43:00 Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info so far.
I had already checked out those rate finders, but found them a little confusing.
I now think I have them under control.
It does seem to me that once again we are being over charged here in NZ.
To send a small parcel from the UK to NZ is GBP 1.68
To send the same weight to the UK is NZ 7.46. (cheap slow rate) NZ$ 8.77 fast rate !

Do you think those prices are comparable ?
Especially as the wages in the UK are much higher than here !

Please note I am more interested in the rate and delivery speed not Xmas closing dates.

832600 2009-11-23 02:52:00 I'm not sure why you are trying to do a cost/time comparision on the north/south and south/north posting. Costs are fixed and beyond our control. The only choices that you and I have is to post or not to post. As previously mentioned, the el-cheapo Christmas posting finishes today. Scouse (83)

The reason is that I am thinking about exporting some products from New Zealand to the UK and the postage seems very dear, yet I hear (read) that postage from the UK to here and from say China to the UK is quite cheap !

So it is important for me and all other exporters, as we seem to be ripped off (over charged) on many things here. And yes we should try to do things about it !

832602 2009-11-23 04:14:00 So start a factory in the UK then. Or an outlet and ship by container load. Sweep (90)
