833632 2009-11-26 01:59:00 Poverty rock is a nickname used by New Zealanders (born here) for Great Britain.
I am only guessing here and I am probably wrong but maybe its because the poms come out here in their droves from their home country, the place must have been **** otherwise they would have stayed there.

Well, could be, most probably so, but then some of us were part of Britains' aid to the underdeveloped colonies......and to boot the New Zealand taxpayer actually paid for us to come out here.

They didn't tell us about all the DDT, DDD, 2,4,5,T, 2,4-D, Lindane and other obnoxious stuff that was being cheerfully sprayed around though, so that we could eat bug free lettuces.

I am a New Zealander from 5 generations ago and have never heard the term poverty rock applied in this country ever.

Carry on guessing but please don't produce the above as fact.

What about those that have left New Zealand to go elsewhere to make more money or the OE.

And to Terrey I must say I prefer immigrants from Great Britain compared to those from Somalia for example. Even the ones we got from Hungaria around 1956 were good.

Quite frankly I am appalled at all the general comments that say that all members of a certain race should be exterminated because of the actions or inactions of some.

I think it was a ten pound pom in your day. Assisted immigrant and I think New Zealand needed them in the day.

833634 2009-11-26 03:15:00 There is also a report today in the Dom Post about the quality of drinking water. I suspect a lot of the problems are due to leeching of farm effluent into the drinking supplies.
It has got much worse in recent years.

The Hutt Upper and Lower, has good water as the major source is from the Tararuas, the Eastern and Western Hutt catchments. That water is as pure as you will get anywhere, as it hasn't been polluted by cows, or by giardia riddled overseas tourists.
Though if DOC have their way and establish Great Walks &c through the Tararuas, and around the catchment perimeter, it may be a different story.

Edit: of course we recently had 1080 aerially dropped all over the catchment and Kaitoke Regional Park, but we are assured it is safe.

Bioworks even said that it is so safe that a 60kg adult would have to eat 50kg of the bait to be affected....Edit: whoops, that is for Brodifacoum, not 1080.
They have since pulled that page from their website after local controversy over poison, but I have cached it to remind them of their stupidity when the time is ripe :)

Gee. Just because *I* never heard of poverty rock does not mean that the expression has not been used by some people in some places.

I think it may have been ten quid pom anyway.

Just took the time to go see a person I know who came from Hertfordshire in 1959 and paid ten quid for the priviledge. They had to be with the same employer for two years as a bond. There were conditions and the fare was assisted.

833637 2009-11-26 04:48:00 Wrong again.

Yeah right. I wish.

There again I don't think I could keep them happy.

833638 2009-11-26 05:14:00 I always thought "Poverty Rock" was a pretty commonplace term, and as I recall there was a bit of a wave of "ten bob poms" in the fifties to fill various positions in the civil(?) service(?). R2x1 (4628)

It was ten british pounds toward the fare on a ship to NZ in 1959.

The immigrants were assisted to fill positions which natural born Kiwis did not take on like Union shop stewards for example. :horrified

833640 2009-11-26 06:01:00 I will tolerate poms in NZ unless they bring their bad pommy traits with them.
Examples
Whinging about everything
Becoming union leaders and causing strikes
Thinking New Zealand born people have to differentiate between different parts of pomland like scottish or welsch.
Going on about their pommy passport which they can go visa free thru europe.
Dont get me wrong I have met some good poms these are the ones with a hatred of their homeland.
