| 1119994 | 2010-07-23 12:48:00 | Which distro is this? My memory of the GRUB 'other OS' autodetection is that it only runs the very first time, when the file is created. Subsequent automatic updates (i.e. when the system kernel is updated, or when update-grub is called from the command-line) should by default only check for other loadable kernels present in the same boot partition, and will leave other partitions alone. That said, it's been quite a while since I've used that feature, so it's entirely possible that things have changed - I'd definitely be interested to know though. |

| 1119995 | 2010-07-23 15:11:00 | Ubuntu 10.04 I installed Ubuntu with the 2 drives disconnected actually, and when I upgraded the kernel it added them to the list without any confirmation or anything. Of course it is Ubuntu, and it does things which nothing else does. Also it's using Grub 2 as well... |

Any distro that had the temerity to do that to me would find itself swiftly removed from the system for which it decided so unwisely to take the administration into its own hands. Ubuntu 10.04That explains everything . I can't stand this particular distro, for many reasons which I've detailed before (but will happily do so again if asked). My personal opinion is that most of their release and packaging teams, and whoever drives the philosophy behind them, should be completely replaced (either that, or they need a fundamental shift in the way they view mass market and enterprise software). Then, and only then, will Ubuntu become a product worthy of consideration. Yes, I am aware I have strong views on this topic . Please by all means feel free to convince me otherwise - I love a good debate :devil. Also it's using Grub 2 as well...More pertinently, this may well be the reason - I haven't used GRUB 2 (my usual suspects are either Syslinux, or GRUB, depending on the application - both are outstanding for a variety of reasons). |

No, I agree with you. They do a lot of things in a stupid way to make things "user friendly" - actually it's worse than that in some places. For example the "Software Center" now only tells you what a program does, what version it is, and maybe shows you what it looks like with a screenshot. Then you get an "Install" button and an un-labelled progress bar. You don't get told anything like: Size of file, speed of download, time remaining etc etc. (which is why for any software install I use command line which actually tells you what's going on) But I put up with it because I'm terrible at getting anything else working :annoyed: |
