1119552 2010-07-17 07:51:00 Which one were you looking at? Yes, e-ink readers are expensive (mainly because the display technology isn't cheap; most of that cost pays for the display), but most of them aren't anything close to that price - for example, sony's ones start at $150US (and they're damn good devices).

I have an e-ink reader (have had it for around 2.5 years), and I love the thing - wherever possible, I get the ebook version of things rather than the dead tree one.

$420!! if you have had something like that for 2.5 years why is it still so expensive??

1119553 2010-07-17 07:53:00 I am using one of those very devices to answer this post.
Eken M001.
Bought it mainly to use as a eBook Reader.
Taking a while to learn how to drive it, but have pretty much got it sorted now.
You should be able to pick one up for about the same price as the Kobo eReader, which makes them resonable buying when you concider the extra functions they have.

can the ekenm001 do video playback? i can imagine it will struggle for HD videos?

1119554 2010-07-17 08:33:00 It can, but it's poor quality.
Sound is not that great either.
Have a look at the utube reviews.
I'm told a firmware update makes them go better, but I havent tried that yet.

umm..now that is useful info...thanks heaps :D

but that also got me confused, ipod touch has a processor which runs at the same speed, and same amount of ram, and they can do great sound, and their battery last a hell of a lot longer.....how come this device have poor sound then???:waughh:

1119556 2010-07-17 10:56:00 Well sound is resonable if you use headphones. Check out those reviews & you'll find your answers. Driftwood (5551)

$420!! if you have had something like that for 2.5 years why is it still so expensive??Because the seller has a very unrealistic idea of what they are worth.

I bought my reader (a Sony PRS-505) in March 2008, and it cost me $280 USD plus shipping. That was a fairly typical price for the time - most retailers then were selling it for between $260 and $310 USD.

These days, the equivalent is the Sony PRS-300. It's basically a newer version of the 505, but with a 5" screen instead of a 6" screen. They have the same resolution. The PRS-300 currently retails for $149 USD.

Went for $153.90. What a steal of a price, especially when you compare it to the prices of the iPad.
Granted there's a lot you're not getting, such as 1/3 the battery life of the iPad, but at that price can you really complain?

I want one now!!! Wonder if there are ways to get them running Froyo?
