1119855 2010-07-18 05:19:00 Hi,

My partner has a Dell Dimension 3100 with a philips DVD writer (came with it when purchased). She's running windows XP. Recently, she has not been able to play dvds or dvd games. The drive does read and play cds though. Before this there was no problem.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Cheers

1119857 2010-07-18 08:45:00 It's quite possibly just at the end of its life.

DVD's aren't as "easy" for a drive to play as CD's are, they need to be more tolerant of things like jitter, laser calibration etc.

Replace the DVD drive, will set you back around ~$60 even for an IDE drive

chilling_silence - I thought this might be the issue - just wanted to check if anything else might be causing it.

Thanks
