2010-07-16 01:39:00 | Hi guys and hoping you can help, again. I have a Compaq Pressiro Sn3100an. Running XP Home with SP3, etc. I also have 768 MB ram. Latest problem is that my wife, bless her, uses Facebook an awful lot. Please don't tell her I said that. Part way through computer starts slowing down. Often she has to quit out and run my emptemp2.exe, Empty temporary folders. This is supposed to clear out all the internet related crap. I also have C Cleaner and run that, but all to often it's still slow and we have to do a system reboot. Any helpful advise and simple advise requested. :thanks Ian

2010-07-16 01:50:00 | WHY YOUR PC SLOWS DOWN OVER TIME 1) Not enough RAM, Win XP needs 512mb to run properly, Vista should have at least 1GB. 2) Spyware. 3) Windows Bloat The longer you use Windows, the more disordered your registry can become, especially if you regularly install and uninstall software. Many applications, on being uninstalled, leave behind “orphan” registry entries. They don’t remove all traces of themselves; causing problems such as sluggish performance, system lockups, or a bloated registry that takes longer to load on startup. Also the NTFS file system contains a file called the master file table (MFT). There is at least one entry in the MFT for every file on an NTFS volume, including the MFT itself. All information about a file, including its size, time and date stamps, permissions, and data content is either stored in MFT entries or in space external to the MFT but described by the MFT entries. As files are added to an NTFS volume, more entries are added to the MFT and so the MFT increases in size. When files are deleted from an NTFS volume, their MFT entries are marked as free and may be reused, but the MFT does not shrink. Thus, space used by these entries is not reclaimed from the disk. Utilities that defragment NTFS volumes cannot move MFT entries, and excessive fragmentation of the MFT can impact performance. Therefore the only cure for bloat is to wipe the PC and do a fresh install of Windows from scratch.

2010-07-16 02:21:00 | I understand a bit of what you are saying, but removing Empty Temp Folders and C Cleaner seems a bit odd? SmartDefrag.exe is to defrag the drives and I thought that was important. Alarm 95 is a reminder program from the old Windows 95 days... | ianhnz (4263) | |
2010-07-16 02:23:00 | You can run ccleaner manually, it doesnt have to be in startup. It only removes them from startup not from the computer | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |

2010-07-16 02:26:00 | Well it may also free up some memory which you don't have much of. Till you need it. You can run it manually it'll remove whatever and it'll still close. But, if you want to leave them there, thats up to you. Its your computer, not mine | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2010-07-16 03:41:00 | Ok, thanks. Have worked through the, hijackthis log, and deleted "some". I'll see how it goes and get back. Thanks for your help, Speedy Gonzales, Ian
