835636 2009-12-02 02:25:00 Too many places to start it's not worth even starting - take it to a mechanic. sam m (517)
835637 2009-12-02 02:27:00 Could be AFM or MAP sensor issues, best to take it to someone who knows.

Did it just start randomly? Did it happen after you did something? How long has it been like this for?

I don't understand: "retaining power" .

Huh?

If you mean it stalls if you don't keep your foot on the accelerator, then that can be caused by numerous things .

It's always good to learn something instead of just rolling over and getting hosed by a "professional" pocket lightener . Self diagnosis is a challenge and can be both rewarding and frustrating at the same time .

A few might be as follows:

1) Low fuel pressure or bad fuel pressure regulator
2) Bad ISC motor
3) Bad TPS
4) Large vacuum leaks (intake manifold?)
5) Bad BARO or MAP sensor

I tend to not think it's the MAF - but if it's really screwed up, then possibly .
Weak spark also does not make my hit list .
Rule out a bad battery/starter .
The alternator isn't on-call at that first start up, so iggy that too .

Get a fuel pressure/flow-rate test . You can do a partial semi-test yourself if you're not afraid of setting yourself or the woods on fire .

The rest might need a good quality (where'd I hear that before?) DIGITAL volt meter with a built in Ohms tester .

835639 2009-12-02 05:17:00 You could try setting self diagnostic codes which might help; I have done by bridging two adjacent terminals in the data connector with key on, or turning the slot on the ECU and read the number of flashes (i.e. ignition light or ECU light flashes) to interpret a possible fault. Though not always conclusive.

Their are numerous help forums for specifics, including data codes for Nissan which are similar for most Nissans 1992 to about 1997; e.g. Code 55 for all "OK" (electrically/circuit wise I guess - should get 5 long then 5 short flashes), 11 for cam angle sensor unit, 12 for air flow meter circuit, 21 for ignition circuit, etc. Diagnostics may help, but perhaps won't indicate all symptoms/issues, e.g. semi blocked fuel filter, or suspect fuel pump. I know codes are listed on the internet for Nissans in various forums...

Here's a Forum here (www.nissanforums.com) on Nissan trouble codes. Most Nissan start repairs I have done are from faulty air flow meter (can clean as described here (www.howstuffinmycarworks.com)) or reground, cam angle sensor (or distributor) cleaning/replacement after about 15 - 17 years use - oil/vapor gets in past worn external/internal seals, and replacing starter starter brushes.
