834297 2009-11-28 03:11:00 Years ago I picked up a book which showed the new Windows system and its advantage over DOS.
One page had a view of a typical DOS/HDM menu system - black background - green printing - all neat and in alphabetical order. One page per menu content. No graphics.
The opposite page showed the much improved Windows system. Loads of colours and icons - a complete mess with no apparent logic.
I wasn't fooled then and am not now. But I have been using the dreadful desktop system for years and got used to it - even managed to get it cleaned up somewhat with icons calling up new folders etc.
But I want OUT.
I want a decent alphabetically menu system - I want control back - I want simplicity again.
I have googled till blue in the face but had no luck - even the old favourite Quickmenu seems completely different now. Anybody know of a good (free) menu system like the old HDM was and which will run in Windows. I refuse to accept any longer the desktop system is good - its too much like my real desktop - a MESS.

834298 2009-11-28 03:47:00 Pardon me for stating the obvious Thomas, but have you considered trying a Linux distro? (and I don't mean something like Ubuntu) nofam (9009)

No - I want to go back not forward. And I have no intention of trying to learn another OS, as I reckon those days are over. I believe I would still have the same problems (too much graphic stuff) and also years of my old files etc could not be opened, and old faithful programs not available.
But thanks for the suggestion.

834300 2009-11-28 07:39:00 Well I have the three floppies that will install MSDos 6.22 but then you are limited as to memory and hard drive partition sizes.

What applications do you want to run?

Yes I have those - and DRDOS and other old DOS stuff plus of course Win3.1 95 etc etc.
But I do not want to go back to an old OS - just love my XP anyway.

I would like to have an icon on my desktop that took me to some program or other that produced an HDM type menu system. Nice simple easy to read reliable and straightforward.
I'm still puzzled why Apple & MS wanted to go the way of the cluttered untidy desktop.

834304 2009-11-28 16:20:00 Ah it brings back memories - DRDOS ! CPM
Yes it was great fun setting up the config.sys files and the bat files and menu systems.
And we (I) was able to make a good living selling and installing computers.

Got that already - good file manager but I don't use it now as I much prefer Total Commander - how anybody can exist without Total Commander amazes me!

But I did use its predecessor XTGold in the DOS days - wonderful program. What many people did not realise was that if you had two computers with XTGold on them then you had a perfect set up to run a private network - without the hassles that MS systems had.

834306 2009-11-28 22:06:00 Ever consider Midnight Commander?

This was a new one on me so I looked at it. Seems to be very similar to my Total Commander but not as good - I could be wrong there.
But it certainly isn't a menu system.
Actually I now wonder if the knowledge of what a good menu system even looks like may be a vanishing skill.

I also wonder if relying on my most unreliable device (my own memory) may have led me astray. I remember the menu system I like as being HDM - but is that correct?
It was on just about every new computer offered in those days. I used it a lot.
