835809 2009-12-03 09:21:00 Or ban motorised vehicle entriely and ONLY allow cyclists or walkers over the bridge - that will take a lot of stress off the structure . We don't need food brought over the bridge in trucks - make them go via the north-western motorway!! (Sorry prefect!!) :D . . . . . .
Nope, we have a new scheme for the cyclists - an old war-surplus trebuchet (ok, very old) . As the cyclists arrive at the harbour's edge, they leap into the saddle of one of many exercycles that wind up the trebuchet . After an invigorating spell of this, the smiling cyclist tightens his helmet before he and his cycle settle briefly in the launch position, a second later he is safely on his way across the harbour and the exercycles go back to their rewinding duties . At times the system develops the odd problem in the landing phase, but steely eyed cyclists are used to occasional hazards; the cheering as each one sets off re-enthuses the waiting exercyclists to pedal faster to be quicker to their turn as aerocyclists .
So far (with the exception of a couple of underweight cyclists who got jellied on launch) every cyclists has crossed the harbour safely, difficulties only occuring after the far shoreline has been crossed . Organisers confidently expect a survivable landing real soon now .

Much better than catapulting them

"Aerocyclists" - sounds like my sort of lark!! Just get the landings survivable (I won't be a guineapig - I've already bled enough for my sport!), and I'd be a starter!! :D

Ridge Rd is a much nicer ride, up or down, than Coatesville/Riverhead - which tends to be a bit on the busy side, and narrow - at least between Coatesville and Riverhead. :)

835812 2009-12-03 10:21:00 In the past New Zealand had some great engineering work feats, but that was long before the red tape/let's tax it/set up a select committee/pay for taniwhas and you-name-it brigades all came on board.
I have been very impressed at how the new bridge in Tauranga (thanks Winston Peters) has been and is being constructed . I am not sure how they paid their contractors, but they worked all hours, stopping only when conditions became too dangerous.

I like the tunnel plan. Once in Sydney we started off to take the tunnel, took a wrong turning and suddenly found ourselves driving over the bridge anyway!!:o

835814 2009-12-03 21:17:00 Bring some workers up from the WestCoast. The boys there know how to lay road can do kilometres of the stuff in the time it takes Auckland to have their smoko/finish propping up the lollipop sign. razzarphenix (2626)
