834317 2009-11-29 21:27:00 Hey this is fascinating........................
...........................................

I don't ever use photos etc as background. This has always struck me as a ridiculous thing to do. Guess I'm an old fashioned so and so. I want my work space clean and uncluttered - except for my desk of course.

..............You sure are a little different than the norm .

Not at all, I am also the norm, it's nearly everyone else who is different. :).
If you remember back to 386s, DX33 cpu 4MB ram (huge amount), 20MB HDD, Win3.1, and were a bit clued up, then the desire was for everything to be small and neat, bloat was just not on, wallpapers, fancy desktops, screen savers and such nonsense just slowed everything to a crawl.

If you were into DOS then Windows was a slow drag, I had audio players, mpeg players, editors, graphics programs, plotter, pcb drawing and electronics simulation etc etc all DOS and did most everything then that I wanted, except http, though I had packet drivers etc and could ftp through dos.

It's like growing up during the war, frugality is second nature, today everyone is profligate

834318 2009-11-29 21:58:00 You are nostalgic for DOS and Xtreegold
You have 21 desktop icons
You dont like a photo as desktop background

You sure are a little different than the norm

Wow - nicest thing anybody has said about me for years.

834319 2009-11-29 22:02:00 Tom, I think you mean 'genealogy' program. 'Gynaecology' is something quite different. Unless of course you have wider interests than I thought.:confused:

Dead right of course (note the pun).
I really slipped up there. Bad enough spelling genealogy
wrongly but not spotting my spell checker had given me an entire new word was unforgivable.
Bet I got some people even more confused than me.

Not all intended to be an insult, if we were all the same the world would be boring it needs eccentrics.

834322 2009-11-30 05:45:00 Hey this is fascinating. I have got my desktop down to 21 icons. But you make this sound pretty bad.
Unfortunately I have always been a bit scared of the start menu and wonder just what you actually do. More details please - even if none of us copy you it sounds interesting.

Using win 7 I just press the MS key on my keyboard up pops the start menu and I start typing the name of the app I want to use then when it is highlighted press enter and it opens the app easy no icons needed :punk
