1121394 2010-07-23 03:38:00 Thanks for your views and comments.

I'm now looking at these 2 processors:

Intel Core i7 870 2.93 GHz Processor Socket 1156 (8MB L3 Cache)
Intel Core i7 930 2.80 GHz Processor Socket 1366 (8MB L3 Cache)

They are selling at about the same price - apparently, the 870 seems to be marginally faster than the 930 from their clock speed.

From the above, 1336 is only marginally more pricey than 1136. I would therefore think that 1336 is a better choice.

1121396 2010-07-23 04:40:00 "Depending" on what your comparing, comparable boards are usually under 200 bucks more expensive on the 1366. So as always its a personable preference if that added costs is worth it or not. Battleneter2 (9361)

x2, that's where the big price difference is, as well as triple channel RAM.

MB prices differences

Triple channel RAM : 3 x 2 GB = 6 GB
Dual channel RAM : 4 x 2 GB = 8 GB

Differences not really that great. Decision is hard to make, though.

1121399 2010-07-23 10:41:00 Personally Id go with 1156 (I did), as long as you go with an i7 CPU and not i5 you'l keep up (and sometimes out perform) a 1366 CPU.

Worrying about the advantages of more than one graphics card, or tripple channel seems a little pointless as even my 5850 Graphics card runs everything max without stressing. And its a reasonable priced card.

I think if I was going to build again (I built mine pretty much as soon as the hardware was available) I would build it the same, didnt cost much compared to what I would have spent on a 920 or 930 based system and keeps up with them. Plus gives you more money for graphics or ram etc

My 2 cents

1121400 2010-07-23 10:55:00 If you're not an enthusiast, as I said before, just keep to an i5/i7 1156 platform.

An i7 1366 platofrm are only for enthusiasts/fools loose with money, i.e. me. :p

1121401 2010-07-23 14:40:00 Most important point is 1366 gives you substantially more memory bandwidth but you can make use of it without overclocking. Deimos (5715)
