834343 2009-11-28 05:59:00 I'm looking for a car radio with CD player. Prime criteria is the ability to pull in national programme stations in a rural area. Current radio is Toyota factory model and has relatively short range. Fine with FM nearby but AM is poor outside 50km range.

Not looking to power big boom box but get reception that is clear.
Price to say $250.00?
Suggestions welcomed, thank you!

834344 2009-11-28 06:25:00 Your problem may not be your radio - sonds more like an antenna. Can you elaborate on the type/state? ubergeek85 (131)
834345 2009-11-28 07:55:00 I think your problem is rural NZ just doesn't have the coverage gary67 (56)
834346 2009-11-28 08:08:00 NZ is one of the few countries that still have AM. problem is most AM tuners are crap and with all of todays electronics it gets lots of interference.
old AM tuners where good but no one bothers making good ones any more as no one wants it.

find a good FM station.

834347 2009-11-28 09:35:00 Thanks for the comments. Antenna is fine and AM signal is picked up without problem on Kaikoura coast - just want a receiver that works! Ideas welcome as to brand and model.

Thanks

834348 2009-11-28 19:12:00 I have just purchased a car radio that has a USB slot,so have put 5000 tunes on it and now don't have to listen to add's,very nice. Cicero (40)
834349 2009-11-28 19:47:00 What sort of Aerial do you have?

I've had trouble with Electric Aerials filling with water and causing problems.

Whatever, my first port of call would be the Aerial. Do you have a little tuning capacitor hidden behind a small hole on the Radio Fascia?

If your not familiar with your particular radio a trip to a serviceman might be the best bet.

As far as reception in the area goes, do any of your friends get reception when you can't?

834350 2009-11-28 23:13:00 Thanks BM. I'll check your idea about the tuning capacitor. In the old car reception was marginally better but not great.

Cicero...not into much music prefer National Programme!

834351 2009-11-28 23:29:00 I bought a Jap import with a radio in and it was crap. The tuning was not where I expected and etc.

I am happy with the Sony I replaced it with as it will play MP3s etc for the times I am on the desert road and no am/fm reception.

Similar to this unit but without the speakers and was sub $200 fitted at the time.
