Something that does a reasonably long thorough test, rather than a one off quickie .

1452442 2018-08-09 09:36:00 I usually just download whatever disc test tool is provided by the manufacturer (Seagate or Western Digital) if I have concerns.

There used to be a free utility called SpinRight by some independent bloke. He's allegedly well respected, but you never know how much is self generated hype.

A decent read/write test will take longer if the disc holds a lot of data, as the program will typically copy data onto pre-tested (and passed) blank spaces before testing (destroying) the original copy of the data in whichever sectors it chooses to test, whereas on blank areas it just needs to write test patterns with disregard to whatever may have been written there previously.

There's also the built in Windows disc test where you can do read/write testing of the entire surface. (Explore drive, right click for Properties, Tools, Error Checking).
