1452218 2018-08-03 00:48:00 I have changed back to the Nov 2016 anniversary Windows 10, from the 2018 update because it was allergic to some of my software, and my phone.
Ever since it has been nagging that I should upgrade to the latest version for security reasons. I agree that I should probably update the security, but I DO NOT want the v1803 version of Windows. If I activate Auto Update it immediately wants to download the new W10.

In the past with WXP & W7, I have been able to download updates of by choice. So far W10 seems to be all, or nothing. What to do?

1452219 2018-08-03 01:46:00 If you have the Cheaper, less featured Home Version of W10, then BY DEFULT ( that's in upper case on purpose) you cant turn off the updates /upgrades. If you have Professional you can delay them by (upgrades)-365 Days (Security Updates)- 30 Days.

There are various ways to stop the updates in Home, BUT some people seem to have the stops working OK, others report they don't.

The one That I use (on home) works fine for me, but other people report they have had it been over ridden.

Programs - you can always in stall them in compatibility mode, that way it tells the programs to run as if on an earlier version of Windows ( I have one here from XP that works fine in all W10's- in compatibility mode) Out side of that it spits the dummy.

BTW - the updates you mention that are wanting to come through, they WILL come in their own time.

1452221 2018-08-03 02:46:00 The easy methods to stop 10 updates no longer work reliably, MS is actively removing those methods .
Even disabling the update service , Ive seen it just re-enable itself on many machines

There are some ways, but they are well & truly system hacks .

Old versions/builds of 10 will no longer get security/bugfix updates , they now "end of service" . Thats what the nag is about

If you want to use 10, just accept that you have little control over updates .

1452222 2018-08-03 05:35:00 I have automatic updates turned off in Group Policy. I would like to manually update security files only. I have W10 Pro working perfectly and don't want it changed. I must find a way to stop the nagging. Tempted to return to Windows 7 Ultimate. :( mzee (3324)

Tempted to return to Windows 7 Ultimate. :(OK so you have pro, and have turned off the updates in GP ? well I'd say they aren't turned off if they are still nagging you.

If you go into the updates /Advanced, there's all the settings, including only allowing Security.

If they are all turned off and don't update then you CAN manually install selected updates, but you have to know what to look for in the way of KB numbers, simply download from

www.catalog.update.microsoft.com

Returning to W7 you'll need to install the newest installer if you want security updates as well, as the inbuilt wont work due to being replaced.

it was allergic to some of my software,
What software do you have that wont work in the latest ?

The software that wouldn't work was WX5 v11 (web editor) which requires .NET framework 3.5. When I tried to add it Windows said that the software was obsolete, and refused to install it from Microsoft. W10 Pro v1607 has no problems with it. V1803 also wouldn't allow me to disable Auto updates, v1607 does.

I have Version 10 of WX5 and thats no problems at all.

I'll have a play with a fresh install and see if I can get it going.

1452227 2018-08-04 00:57:00 Okey Dokey - Sorted:)

I just tried this on a Workshop W10 1803, after downloading a Trial of WX5 V11 Trial - Worked fine.

To install (as mentioned in earlier post) Install .NET framework 3.5. Via the inbuilt. Here's how -- (save me writing it all out) :p

docs.microsoft.com

Once Installed, I then put in WebX5 V11 while the trial is limited to options, it works perfectly.

If you are still having problems then its something else causing it.

Just to show there was no problem I made a quick (4 Minute) video, its W10 1803 on a VM Running from the server in the workshop on the Lounge PC. I have paused it a couple of times during installing operations to cut down the time ,its a little bumpy in places but shows its working. :)
