My main 4 year old PC is developing a problem. It restarts for no apparent reasons, -- couldn't complete the restarting process - after the POST, with a white cursor blinking. I got to push the power button to shut it down and restart it. Event Viewer and Reliability viewer suggest nothing much info other than saying that Windows restarted unexpectedly.

On both occasions, I was doing nothing but just playing some youtube videos, no dodgy sites.

It happened two times in the last couple of days.

Any suggestions as to what to look for?

1451898 2018-07-22 21:45:00 Probably hardware . You'll need to start swapping out parts : Power supply , video card , RAM etc
win logs wont help as it cant log anything if it crashes .

also turn off Win10 fast startup (in win's power settings )

1451899 2018-07-22 22:48:00 I have turned OFF fast start up late last night. Will see how it goes.

I do recall that just before the PC crashes, the mouse stopped working and the next second, it restarts on both the occasions. It could be the mouse driver.

Could be , but unlikely. Chances are mouse not working are a sign of Win starting to hang.
Does the keyboard work when the mouse hangs ?

Make sure you're fully backed up, in case its the Hard drive causing these issues .
Also see if the fans are OK , could be overheating or clogged up with dust . Also check the CPU heatsink isnt clogged up under its fan.
Have a look to see if the power supply fan is OK & spinning, shine a torch at the Power supplies fan from the back of the case.
May not be a fan issue, but its an easy thing to check.

The other easy thing to try, is unplug & reseat the RAM several times. That actually sometimes does the job. Try a single stick of RAM only if you have 2 sticks of RAM.
Same with the video card if you have one in the PC. Also check the vid card fan if applicable.

1451902 2018-07-24 06:13:00 It restarted again early this afternoon. So, it's not the Fast start up in Win10.

Opened the case and did a thorough clean up (not bad, really - quite clean) removed CPU heat-sink assembly, cleaned it, reapplied thermal paste, put it back on. Idling at 31~35 C.

Running Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. doing a Stress Test now. CPU Temp 72 ~ 75 C at 100% CPU utilization.

Any other suggestions, please.

1451904 2018-07-24 06:48:00 Lets find out if its hardware or Software.

In the search Type or copy/paste in View advanced system settings Open it.

Scroll down, in start-up and recovery - untick auto restart.

If its Software, you will get a blue screen which hopefully displays more useful information. You need to write down Completely the full error code.

If its hardware, something like a Power Supply failure then it may simply shutdown and not restart automatically.

In the original post its mentioned a white flashing cursor. Sometimes this is caused by Graphic Drivers or some other driver. If its a driver it will say what in the BSOD.

Thanks, wainuitech for pointing out that it could be a graphic drivers issue. I updated the Nvidia driver manually - downloaded from Nvidia site and looks it's OK now, not restarts since.

I now recall that I had Nvidia driver problem when I first upgraded to Win 10.
