| 1451776 | 2018-07-19 11:12:00 | I am planning to build a new rig sometime soon and will be passing my current one on to the family. For numerous reasons I would prefer to keep Windows 8.1 for the new PC and buy Win10 for my current system. Will I be able to do this or will MS spit the dummy and refuse to activate Win8.1 on the new system? It was no problem in the past but they keep tabs on hardware changes these days, don't they? | tommy (2826) | ||

Even 7 drivers might work in some cases . It would be a very painfull experience to go through though. Then again, why even bother with 8.1 ?? 10 is just so much better than 8 . Personally , I would just install 10 using the 8.1 install key. |

Earlier this year I rebuilt a guys PC with New Motherboard /CPU/memory, and he still wanted windows 8.1 On installing it pops up with a warning message saying (along the lines of) this operating system is to old to run correctly on hardware. Many of the manufactures no longer support 7 or 8.1. While I did manage to get it installed, the pop up keeps appearing on a regular basis - a real PITA !! Its NOT Microsoft, its the hardware manufactures. |

I built a new pc with a Gigabyte motherboard, and it has Win 7 & Win 10 drivers - nothing for Win8.x I assume other manufacturers will be doing something similar. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the info. Then again, why even bother with 8.1 ?? 10 is just so much better than 8 . Because I have Win 10 on a laptop and do not like it. And my printer/scanner, which I am happy with, has drivers for Win 8.1 but not for 10. I don't want to buy a new printer. Its not JUST drivers as well. Earlier this year I rebuilt a guys PC with New Motherboard /CPU/memory, and he still wanted windows 8.1 On installing it pops up with a warning message saying (along the lines of) this operating system is to old to run correctly on hardware. Now I come to think of it I did notice some motherboards mentioning running Win 10 on them but had not thought too much about it. |

(make and Model) Some printers dont have drivers from the manufactures as they are already inbuilt in W10. Same with the scanner - The free Scan app you can get for W10 is really good. |
