1454345 2018-10-13 00:57:00 Absolutely disgusting comment.

Well said prefect!

I too, was under the impression the comments were about remembering the brave men who went there, fought there and died there.

Nothing about whether it was right or wrong as most of the combatants had little choice as to whether they went or not. The Generals were not very good at war, I agree but that's not what this post is about.

The father of my 86yr old English friend I walk with most mornings, was a conchie and he suffered probably more than those who fought so I understand that side of it. They also went through hell albeit for a different reason.

1454346 2018-10-13 02:45:00 Actually, the 100th anniversary was 2017.

According to this RNZ article,

Officially 843 New Zealanders died and over 1700 were wounded in just the first few hours of October 12th 1917, as allied troops tried and failed to take the village of Passchendaele in Belgium.

The battle eventually claimed the lives of nearly 2000 New Zealand soldiers.

But not let's argue. It was an unnecessary war; Europe was not any stranger to unnecessary wars then and it could be said, nothing has changed since. Land grabs were usually the catalyst of European wars. Either that, or warring factions between ruling families

And yes, some of our strategists and military minds were not of the best. Our young men were not the best equipped for any battles.

We may not agree with that war, the factors or reasons to spark it. But we should not forget those young men, rightly or wrongly, who had the courage of their convictions and were prepared to lay down their lives.

That all those guys died for nothing?

At least that is one very excellent reason for us all to remember it.
