1454109 2018-10-06 00:35:00 I now drive a Toyota hybrid Prius plug in. I do use a lot less petrol these days. I have solar panels on my house roof which I use to recharge the car battery for free.

That's nice. I did the calculation on solar for my place.
At the end of 25 years I have lost money on it, not saved anything.

Prius? Well the most expensive car I have ever bought was $8700. That's less than the battery replacements would cost me.

Whatever, we budget, I sock away some money each week, one amount goes into the petrol fund....and of course thngs are adjusted to take inot aco**** increases in costs - tax, oil companies, markups, whatever the reasons.

We don't drive so much now anyway, so I fill up maybe every 3 weeks or so.

$2.25 at that Gull.

1454110 2018-10-06 02:13:00 Everyone stops buying petrol from say, Z, instead buying from the remaining ones as usual, after two or three weeks Z reduces prices in desperation to get customers, then everyone only buys from Z, soon the other suppliers have to reduce if they want buyers. QED. All it takes is the public working together, fat chance of that in NZ.

If this were to happen people would start to queue up at Z as they are naturally looking for cheaper petrol. When there is a petrol rise by one or more oil companies, the trend is that the others follow suit. The same should happen for price drops.

I have just heard on the news that the government takes 53c in tax on each litre. No wonder the price is so high.:waughh:

1454113 2018-10-07 20:19:00 When the excises get put in the Consolidated fund, do they just sit there or get used for, oh, I don't know, hospitals, schools or other frivolous stuff? Whenu (9358)

Seen as there's no such thing as a "Road Tax", could be used to bulk up income and other taxes.
