1451786 2018-07-20 21:01:00 I am planning to build a new rig sometime soon I would prefer to keep Windows 8.1

Give it a go.
8 isn't that old I think you will find you have no issues with drivers at all.

1451787 2018-07-21 00:49:00 Comments like that one are quite amusing :) W10 is really a combination of W7 & W8 . ( more towards W7)
Yes I know . I didn't like Win8 when I first got it but managed to eventually tame it into working for me . Then I had to start all over again with Win10 when they put the start menu back .

I haven't been able to turn automatic updates off which is my biggest bug because the laptop is getting on in age, used infrequently and slows to less than a crawl virtually every time it is used until all the updates have installed . It drives me nuts . Short of keeping it off the net I haven't been able to prevent this .

What printer / Scanner do you have ? (make and Model)

Some printers dont have drivers from the manufactures as they are already inbuilt in W10 . Same with the scanner - The free Scan app you can get for W10 is really good .
Canon PIXMA MP760 .

Canon PIXMA MP760 . There are ways to disable W10 Updates in Home . But if a person has the cheaper Home edition by default you cant . You Have to Have the more expensive Professional to do that, and can set it to 35 Days for updates, and upgrades for 365 Days .

The Printer -- For W10 -Canon advise the W7Drivers should work but with some limitations . For Windows 8 . 1 - They don't make any drivers either .

Slowness in PC's (desktop or Laptops) often are caused by to much stuff running in the background . Most can be turned off increasing speed . I set up a Laptop last week, had a Pentium 4 with 2GB Memory . By the time it was finished it was actually quite workable .

1451789 2018-07-21 03:13:00 Thanks for your advice wainuitech. The laptop was upgraded from Win7 to Win10 so would be the Home version. There is very little on the PC therefore almost nothing running in the background. As I said, it runs fine until first used after a few weeks or months break when it appears to be updating. It is annoying but I work around it now by ensuring that I allow time for it to get it done. I still want to have control over when and what updates are applied on the desktop PC however, as I don't want to be forced to update to a new version of Windows like what MS tried to do when Win10 came out.

The printer drivers currently being used are for Win7.

Its not the programs you may have installed but all the processes in the background.
In W10 do you by default there are at LEAST 40+ Apps running in the background all using power even when you are not using them ;) If you have a name brand computer there will be quite a few more.

This is ONLY one set of options:

Then there's various others also running, so by turning them all off you save power, which gives more performance for general tasks you may be doing.

1451791 2018-07-22 01:34:00 The sooner everyone gets on to W10, the better off we will all be. Digby (677)

Some software doesnt work on 10 or is unsupported , so some small businesses need to stick with 7 . Came across that recently with POS software, needed to run a small shop .
Some hardware STILL doesnt work properly on 10 (eg a few printers) : you can blame manufacturers for that though , for their crappy support.
And some MFC printers still have some issues with 8 & 8.1 : eg scan issues : again blame the manufacturers :badpc:

Then theres the scitzo setup with control panel & settings . Having 2 places top access setting shows what a rush job 10 was .
And the Winupdate issue is still a problem for some with 10home .

1451793 2018-07-23 02:24:00 I think windows 10s biggest problem is MS wants us all to move to the store and the modern universal apps but users prefer and/or need the older desktop style apps so they have to support both. Gives the whole OS a split personality.
First thing I do is change several default apps to my preferred desktop programs in the settings.

Anyway as Piroska already said, try it and see. No harm done. I prefer 10 to 8.1 myself, struggle to see what 8.1 has that 10 doesn't but if you like 8.1 all you can do is try.
If I can run and update windows 10 on an atom with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage I'm pretty sure most older hardware around can run it just fine.

I turned off (set to manual) most if not all services listed on this page www.askvg.com in addition to a few on Black Vipers page. Maybe there is more that I can do?

Yesterday the laptop was switched on for the first time in three weeks and it took virtually all day for updates to download and install. I wasn't very happy when I discovered that most of what was installed is crap I am never going to use on it. If I am going to install Win10 on the new PC I really need to find out how I can take control of it.

If I am going to install Win10 on the new PC I really need to find out how I can take control of it . Time taken Doing updates will depend on several things .
1 . Type of connection ( wireless or ethernet)

2 . Speed of Internet connection

3 . Amount of time since last lot of updates .

4 . Speed of computer (A low spec PC will take longer)

Personally, if you want speed back on your Computer it takes a few seconds to turn off various items = less rubbish running in the background = faster .

Heres a couple: From Start - Settings (Cog) - System- (on Left) Notifications & Actions - turn off all notifications .

Settings - Privacy - Background Apps - Turn them all OFF .

If any apps need to be on you'll get a popup message stating . Turn on the app that's requiring it .

There are ways to disable windows updates in Home BUT the problem is when ever you decide to actually do them it will take a LOT longer . Updates come through weekly, some require a restart some don't, some will take longer than others .

One of my workshop PC's I turn off / on the updates via a . bat file ( W10 home) As when doing data recovery over night don't want it to restart .

This video is about as boring as watching paint dry, esp when searching ;) but shows the . bat file I have working . As you can see by the date it was just over a month ago they last ran .

Most of the time you shouldn't even know they are happening . The usual reason if you do is your computer is either low Spec, or to much running in the background, going back to lack of power for what's happening .
