1451996 2018-07-26 00:58:00 Hi All,

Our family has been rural for the last few years and we have just moved to the suburbs. In the country we had a VDSL connection and an orcon NF4V modem. The internet bandwidth was fine (I was always hard wired via ethernet) and so was the wifi.

Now that we have moved to town we're on a fibre connection. The internet speed is fine when plugged into the modem via ethernet, but the WiFi is horrible. My modem is now the later model NF18. It runs 2.4 and 5Ghz, where the older NF4V didn't have the 5Ghz option.

My wife's laptop doesn't have an ethernet port, so she is forced to use the WiFi to get internet. With the modem sitting under her desk and full bars of WiFi, sites are timing out and loading really slowly, where my computer is next to hers and I'm wired in with ethernet and have no problems.

I suspect it has something to do with the larger amount of wireless routers since we now have close neighbours, although the modem's html interface tells me that the channel that is using has no interference (I suspect it changes channels automatically), I have not set a channel manually.

Any advice to trouble-shoot this issue would be much appreciated. One thing I will try is plugging in the old NF4V we were using back in the country, as it's compatible with fibre. I'll report back on that soon.

Cheers

1451997 2018-07-26 01:12:00 UPDATE: I had tried rebooting the new NF18 a bunch of times to no avail. One time it was OK shortly after a reboot, but then it would go bad. I have my phone streaming YouTube videos for music on the stereo and it kept having to load. We have a sleepout at our place and there was no WiFi reception there and couldn't cast anything to the TV.

I've now plugged in the old NF4V and it's soooo much better. I can get a couple of bars on my phone out in the sleep-out and actually cast video to the TV out there. My wife's laptop is browsing much faster. Why the hell would a newer model modem have crappier WiFi? I even tried disabling the 5Ghz antenna and just running the 2.4 and it made no difference. I'm keeping the old modem and will report back if I have any issues.

1451998 2018-07-26 01:55:00 The 5 GHz is reported to be faster in ideal circumstances, but the 5GHz is also a lot more vulnerable to interference, and obstacles. I'd disable the 5GHz entirely since you work fine off the more reliable 2.4

Your own assumption of interference from all the neighbours is likely correct, although it does sound like the new modem is a bit of a dud.

1452000 2018-07-26 02:15:00 Thanks Guys,

Funnily enough I recently had a fault with Orcon and they accidentally sent me two new NF18 modems (the fault wasn't even with the bloody modem, but their protocol is such that they have to send you a new modem before they can contact the Fibre vendor)... So because they sent me two new NF18's, one's still in the box so I'll open that and see if the WiFi is any better than the other one. If it's not I'll probably let Orcon know as it could be an inherent issue with the NF18 model. I'll try this later tonight as there is work to be done!

1452001 2018-07-26 02:26:00 So I called Orcon and apparently they have huge issues with the WiFi on the NF18, have already rolled out multiple updates for the modem and are working with Netcomm to get it resolved. They're hoping that the next update will fix the issue. Apparently the issue is with the 2.4Ghz module. I'm keeping the NF4V for now ;)

Cheers all

1452002 2018-07-26 05:48:00 You didn't say what speed you are actually getting. I have an Orcon NF4V connected solely as a modem, feeding to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000, and get 96Mbps down and 33 Mbps up. The Nighthawk set itself up and I hardly had to do anything. I could take the NF4V out of the chain completely, but would then have no telephone as this is needed for the phone connection to fibre. Richard (739)

s

Wifi is horrible,

Can you move the modem.....my brother put his in centre of house and it improved things, he has a pc at one end, a laptop and ph at other, so centre worked best.

He has an old laptop...it has the worst speed of them all, on wifi, his phone does well in the same location, laptop not so good.

He decided the difference is the wifi connector...and yes, most likely, age of the laptop one....he is going to have a cbale to that room, for that, ph is fine, tablet is fine there.

Haven't tested the speed, I just know sites shouldn't timeout when the device is within 1 meter of the modem. It's fine now that I've switched from the NF18 to the NF4V. There's an inherent issue with the NF18's WiFi which Orcon are working with Netcomm to fix, so I'm sticking with the NF4V for now as it's working fine.

It's in the centre of the house. I'll be wiring cat6 to the sleepout to get the best latency for gaming out there :)

Overall, it's all sorted, turned out to be an inherent issue with the NF18's WiFi.

1452005 2018-07-26 06:20:00 There's also this weird property of wi-fi where certain devices don't get along. For example my laptop works really well on wi-fi at home but at work it has all kinds of trouble despite a strong signal. Then if I use my phone and share the wi-fi (android phones can be wi-fi repeaters now apparently) it then magically works perfectly, on the same connection, via a phone with worse wi-fi reception than the laptop has,.... (no I'm not sharing my 4G it's wi-fi sharing) makes no sense. This is just one example, I've come across it before with various adapter and router combinations.

If there's an option to use a cable, it's always better.
