1451756 2018-07-18 01:57:00 I have 2 M.2 Slots on my board
one is M2A 32GB and the other M2P 16GB

Does this mean like it sounds, one is faster than the other?
Also what I need to know is which slot should hold the M.2 and which should hold the Optane?
If I had a gun to my head I would say

M2A = M.2
M2P = Optane

Am I correct?

Your motherboard manual should tell you what drive types are supported in each slot. Some slots are SATA only, some are NVME only, and some will do either.
M.2 can also be used for wi-fi & bluetooth modules and the like and comes in different lengths.

My suspicion would be the A slot for optane. It's an NVME drive.

edit, can't get rid of the second thumbnail...

According to the manual they are identical slots except that 32GB/16GB thing which has thrown me for a loop

1451759 2018-07-18 04:52:00 It's just the number of PCI-e lanes allocated to the slot. The 32Gbps slot has 4 lanes, the 16Gbps will more than likely only have 2. The PCI 3.0 standard is capable of 8Gbps per lane (it's actualy GT/s but don't even go into that..)

I wouldn't have thought you'd put an optane drive in the second slot as it will probably be bottlenecked. A slower m.2 SSD wouldn't be.

You can work that out - so let's say you want to put (for example) an Intel 760p in the 16GB slot. That SSD is capable of 3200Mb/s transfer speeds (or approx 25Gbps) so you'd bottleneck that card in the second slot.

Say a Crucial MX500 - that's more like 600Mb/s, or around 5Gbps, so that card wouldn't be bottle necked. Think that's right at least....

1451760 2018-07-18 12:00:00 The Optane is going to be configured for the 4TB mechanical drive not the M.2. DeSade (984)
