1122003 2010-07-24 15:26:00 Looking to buy a budget rack mount NAS (1-2U) that's less then 12" in depth.
In this size range I'm guessing I'm limited to a 4 drive NAS.

I don't need many features or amazing speeds. although it will be used in an office so it has to be reasonably quiet.

1122004 2010-07-24 21:37:00 Something like: ascent.co.nz

We have one of the non-rack-mountable versions of this NAS and it's quite good. You can do things like integrate with AD so you can set up appropriate security for certain folders, etc.

1122005 2010-07-25 03:54:00 You could custom-build yourself with the likes of an Atom D510MO really cheap! Just add HDD's and you're away!

How much storage space are you after?

I'll have to check when I get to work tomorrow, but it's an older model.

1122008 2010-07-25 08:57:00 Building my own is defiantly an option, I will just need to find a suitable case and RAIDcontroller.
Looking at using 4x 1.5-2TB HDD's in RAID5

1122010 2010-07-25 12:05:00 That could work, any D510 mini ITX boards with 4 or more sata ports you could recommend? pantera989 (14533)
1122011 2010-07-25 20:51:00 The aforementioned D510MO works wonders, but only has two. I've also played with several other atom-based motherboards, the likes of the D945GCLF / D945GCLF2, Foxconn's 45CS ... All two SATA ports. Chilling_Silence (9)
1122012 2010-07-30 16:18:00 Found this Atom D510 based motherboard from gigabyte (Gigabyte GA-D510UD) that has 4 Sata ports for around $185
Zotex also has a mini-DTX board based on the D510 that has 6 sata, 16x and 1x PCI-e slots, although I can't find it in New Zealand and costs over $300
