1121868 2010-07-24 01:37:00 I wanted to put a media server hidden away using wirless, but ti seems any OS or USB wireless i use doesnt work. I can connect to the secured network, obtain and IP and surf the web, but i cannot ping to it, or browse any shares. I can ping from it to other machines fine. There are no firewalls or any security yet (as i wanted to see what the issue was) Any ideas on what it could be? I've tried Windows XP Pro Sp3, Vista Business SP2, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2. Each one will no allow any shares to be browsed and will not respond to DNS or IP pings. aidanmaz (7180)
1121869 2010-07-24 01:58:00 Media server as in what? What is it exactly? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121870 2010-07-24 02:39:00 i use the media server term loosely, meaning a desktop with a ton of space so i can stream/store audio and video for my home network aidanmaz (7180)
1121871 2010-07-24 02:40:00 And what version of windows / linux / whatever is on it? Is there a wireless access point / router here somewhere? Speedy Gonzales (78)

Ive tried every operating system i can get my ahdns on, and so far the same result. right now its running XP Professional. Wireless connects to router/internet, as ive just done 300mb of windows updates, but other pcs cannot see it on the network. It appears invisable

1121873 2010-07-24 02:51:00 Does this media server PC have the same workgroup name as the rest of the network? It doesnt sound like it, if it doesnt appear on the network (the other PC's cant see it). Change all of the workgroup names to the same name. Is SP3 on it?? It may help to install it (if it isnt). 1121874 2010-07-24 02:53:00 Yes SP3 and workgroup name is WORKGROUP on every machine in the house. Made sure i checked these before i posted. Even if i hadnt, i should be able to ping the IP/PC name and get a reply. aidanmaz (7180)
1121875 2010-07-24 03:03:00 Change all the workgroup names to MSHOME then reboot all of them.

Then see if it works. If you gave it an ip (is it a valid ip) within the router's valid ip range?

1121876 2010-07-24 03:08:00 Tried both DHCP and Static, 192.168.1.x with a 24bit subnet (255.255.255.0)
changed workgroup name as suggested, still unable to ping/browse shares.

1121877 2010-07-24 03:15:00 Have you enabled file sharing on it / created a folder then shared it? Most of the shares on it are the default ones. Which you probably cant share. And dont share ALL of C, or all of the hdd. Speedy Gonzales (78)
