1121860 2010-07-24 01:36:00 My PC runs XP pro - fully windows updated & regularly cleaned of trash & registry rubbish.

I've a problem that keeps cropping up when I open / close folders and sometimes when I close applications. It comes up with "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Sorry for the inconvenience." (See attached screen-shot)

If I "click here" I get the details about the error but it's a bit meaningless to me.

After the screen flickers a bit & settles down - it's usually reversed the order that I have programs open (the tabs along the bottom of the screen).

Anyway, I've attached 3x screen shots so you can see what it's doing.

I have done a sfc /scannow several times on different days - it always needs the O/S CD but the problem persists.
I've done an error-check using the windows tools. No improvement.

I read somewhere that I may have to re-install windows - presumable to fix any issues or missing DLLs, etc. If this is necessary, are all my personal settings, programs and data retained?

Any assistance helpful.

1121861 2010-07-24 02:01:00 WHAT programs have you installed (that add themselves to the shell context menu)?? ie: When you right mouse in my computer, the programs / options that appear here ? Some programs that add their options here, can crash my computer (they maybe faulty / corrupt) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121862 2010-07-24 02:20:00 I don't quite get where to look. If I right click my computer I can't see where to find these details about programs?
I have added odd programs and just recently Textmaker Viewer to read .odt files. But it was doing it before then anyway.
Some mention Nortons as a problem - but I've never had it on here.

1121863 2010-07-24 02:32:00 If my computer opens (without crashing). Open a folder that's got a file or something in it / right mouse on it. That's the context menu. You don't right mouse on my computer on the desktop. You have to open it first Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121864 2010-07-24 02:45:00 I've attached another screenshot - is this the context menu? straka01 (310)
1121865 2010-07-24 02:47:00 Thats it. Are all of those still installed, including whats in the send to menu? Open Winrar untick its context menu options. Then see if it crashes. If it doesnt that maybe the cause Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121866 2010-07-24 03:06:00 Yes they're all installed.
OK. I've unclicked that. Made the screen shudder momentarily.
I'll do some testing (with fingers crossed) and see if that's fixed it.
Thanks.

1121867 2010-07-24 03:14:00 Ok if explorer crashes again, then it maybe one of the other programs in that menu, that are crashing it Speedy Gonzales (78)
