1121812 2010-07-23 23:40:00 Doing a mass optimization of my PC - So I took a peek into my HD using Disk Investigator and when viewing clusters it displays:

A disk read error occurred.
NTLDR is missing.
NTLDR is compressed.

(When a individual cluster is clicked as displayed in the attached image)

I have noticed on boot up the power light flickers faintly for a minute or so after the desktop/system tray is displayed, although everything loads ok (only five programs on startup according to sysinternals autoruns). Load "light flashing" time use to be longer (up to 5 min), but I cleaned out Trojans/malware, etc by doing boot scans with the usual free antivirus software. Also disabled programs, removed unused drivers, hardware, etc.

So now trying to target windows XP starting files on boot up for any errors.

Would that NTLDR error be a cause a delay in boot loading of files, and the faint flickering light? Just want to see if anyone has experienced this behavior and what measures were taken. Really I want to strip back boot loading/the flashing light to a minimum.

1121813 2010-07-23 23:50:00 So, does it boot into windows XP or not? You cant do much about reducing the flashing (its telling you its accessing the hdd). And it's probably loading services in the background Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121814 2010-07-23 23:55:00 Yep it boots in XP OK, but puzzled about the NTLDR error which I assume is a valid error. Actually you have raised a good point about services - perhaps I should investigate them and disable those not required. kahawai chaser (3545)
1121815 2010-07-24 00:04:00 It is a valid error. Its probably because XP is installed, you see those errors. If you formatted it, you wouldn't see anything Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121816 2010-07-24 00:22:00 Be careful WHAT services you disable. Disable the wrong one/s the system will either crawl. Or programs will fail to work. I wouldn't rely on blackviper's site whatever it is. Disabling what this site recommends can also make programs fail / windows crawl Speedy Gonzales (78)
1121817 2010-07-24 00:42:00 Thanks for tip - and I read through that black viper site last week. kahawai chaser (3545)
1121818 2010-07-24 01:06:00 BlackViper has a default set of startup services as well as tweaked. Roger Hunt (13648)
1121819 2010-07-24 01:32:00 You are viewing in raw file mode and as text so are just seeing error messages that can be thrown up. If you open up most exe files you can see similar things. mikebartnz (21)
