| 1121671 | 2010-07-23 13:01:00 | I've got a Compaq Presario laptop running Vista and Firefox and while using it last night it made this really bizarre electronic squealing sound for about five seconds. I've had it for about two years but it doesn't get a lot of use and this is the first time I've ever had any trouble with it and the first time I've heard this noise, although it has on occasion sort of clacked, like there is something in the DVD drive trying to run (there isn't). Tonight when I turned it on it at first appeared to start normally then a HUGE error message appeared on a blue screen - too large to even read all of it before it disappeared and the more familiar black screen with an error message about whether you wanted to start Windows normally, etc appeared. The big message said something about Windows having either recovered or experienced a major error and then the second line had something like BAD (something - possibly IMAGE?) error. I don't store anything on the laptop, it's only really used for convenience, so at least there is nothing to worry about losing if it dies, but has anyone else experienced this? If so, what can be done - if anything? Or is the laptop on its way out? I hope not, as it's barely used and in as-new condition! I'll check back tomorrow to see if anyone has any advice, so thanks in advance. |

Either way, I suspect it's a case for replacing parts if there's been squealing / hissing / popping / grinding type noises. This is one of those times when a laptop is particularly difficult... and costly. |
