837310 2009-12-07 09:34:00 Define God. Without an accurate definition, the question doesn't really make sense.

Ah, but there is a much bigger problem than that, there is no issue in defining a Supreme Being per se, but which one? Our world is teeming with God-versions.

Their various believer-groups can't all be right, so there's got to be a fairly large number of mighty disappointed souls swimming around somewhere.

Anyway, since time began, most of the world's atrocities have been inflicted in the name of one of these Gods, so I've zero faith in the skill set of supreme beings, they seem to be a bunch of egotistical ratbags to me.

I certainly wouldn't let my daughter go out with one.

Cheers

837311 2009-12-07 09:34:00 Oh.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. Before my faith in Christianity faded I used to ask myself that question. Even up to now I still cannot make my mind up about that one, although there is a theory as to how life started, I feel it is much too statistically improbable to have happened (the primordial soup theory thing).

However I approach it in a scientific way, which favours the above theory in place of resorting to some sort of intelligent creator.

So yeah, I have my doubts about the scientific theory for how life started, but just because science hasn't proven it, doesn't mean science cannot explain it. Resorting to saying god created life is a bad shortcut to a scientifically wrong conclusion.

Bugger, I was going to throw a sermon at you, But your post makes too much sense.:D

837312 2009-12-07 09:37:00 Don't get me wrong though. I believe religion (at least the modern ones, that excludes all the bloodshed) is a great vehicle for morality and ethics for young children. Religion does have a place in today's society, as long as religious people AND atheists do not try to shove his/her own opinion down each others' throats.

I have friends who are religious (one is so just in case god is real and he doesn't want to go to hell) and I get along just fine with them. They know I'm an atheist but they know I won't start shoving atheism down their throats. We've had discussion on the topic but we've never taken it as far as to get each other mad. It's just called respect.

Sermon? Nah, I would probably just fall asleep. But if there were naked chicks in that sermon.....

HAHA I replied with this

Tell him to stop quoting the bible as evidence. It's not. And if he tried to do it in a real theological discussion he'd be thrown out of the room. The bible was written by who knows how many authors with different minds, translated from many different languages and spanned more than nine centuries. It is NOT evidence for god's existence. Hell, even the bacteria flagella can be a more compelling evidence (even though it's not!).

And don't say he has half a brain. You're just stooping yourself down to his level. Just discuss to a level where each party can have heated discussion without the personal hostility.

I'm usually quite level headed in such arguments, but I kinda just felt like letting loose for once.

Yeah, so do I. Guilty as charged. It can be hard to keep it cool.

Gonna have a shower now. A warm one.

837317 2009-12-07 10:22:00 I love how they throw verses from the bible at you that have pretty much nothing to do with anything and half the time don't make any sense.

Me? I'm a nihilist.

837319 2009-12-07 17:37:00 Actually, the god thing has been around in various flavours for quite a few years - almost as long as prostitution - although with a lesser warranty system. R2x1 (4628)
