NZ has a high rate of Salmonella (especially Campylobacter) in our chicken. I can't remember the exact figures, but a recent TV show investigation showed that most fresh chicken had some level of contamination on the outside of it. Basically if you don't cook the chook thoroughly or follow clean hygiene practices when handling the raw meat you have a reasonable chance of getting sick. | Jen (38) | ||

It was pissing down the other week, here in Wellington. The clouds were so low I couldn't see 10 metres ahead of me. I went and got the kindling, the beer, a bit more beer, some sausages, the potatoes to roast em in their jackets, some chocolate for the wife, then turned back and got another flagon of beer. I get back home (this is walking, you Yanks used to that? it's 10 minutes either way!!!!) and the wife says I'm not allowed to convert the fireplace to a bbq! |

Yep, they're all at my place, drinking beer, eating the best grass-fed BBQ'd beef in the pouring rain, they say "Hi, we're staying here!":D |

Very rarely do I even salt or spices on meats, except for lamb which cannot have enough garlic slivers pushed into the fat! NO MINT JELLY either! If I want to taste mint, I'll eat toothpaste . :o Mint jelly is a disgusting attempt to copy the real thing . To make real mint sauce chop up some mint leaves sprinkle with sugar and then soak in malt vinegar, the only condiment for lamb :drool:drool |

One thing my mom taught me was to pre-soak a whole or cut up chicken in a pot of heavily salted water for 3/4 hour or so . You'd be surprised at the number of squiggling parasites that come to the surface . Just thought you'd like to know . I never fear beef however - if it's not chopped or ground . If the surface is heated by flames, then there's nothing INSIDE the meat that can hurt you - salmonella-wise, that is . |

I'd eat BBQ/outside much more often but the wife hates BBQ's, I didn't realise to what extent when I married her. You may think you know some one, But really, You have no idea. |
