838484 2009-12-10 19:39:00 Sad - we do here but somehow Facebook deems itself above and beyond the law . . . .

Critics: Facebook two-faced on privacy

While praising the move to a simpler system that enables per-post privacy settings, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, among others, found fault with the defaults . "Although sold as a 'privacy' revamp, Facebook's new changes are obviously intended to get people to open up even more of their Facebook data to the public," the group said . "The privacy 'transition tool' that guides users through the configuration will 'recommend' — preselect by default — the setting to share the content they post to Facebook, such as status messages and wall posts, with everyone on the Internet, even though the default privacy level that those users had accepted previously was limited to 'Your Networks and Friends' on Facebook . " Said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/owlfjwqvrrfdlnzmdkglzdcvscdfpgslpkwgnpwrmlqzqj_pyh" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com yvjmyqlql . html) "Facebook is nudging the settings toward the 'disclose everything' position . That's not fair from the privacy perspective . " And in another change, some personal profile information that previously could be set to private is now public by default, with no option to hide it .

{ibid:}
Facebook wants to be the finger on the pulse of the world, and these maneuvers are absolutely designed to enable this . And if Facebook status updates end up being news items or popping up in Google's real-time feed, it'll attract visitors to the site, and that earns advertising dollars . So, basically, Facebook's sold you out, or at least presenting the sale as a fait accompli: ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/pmmfjmvsccfblkqdbytlqbrswrbfgtwlgymtkgmcdlvqvy_pyh" target="_blank">http: yvjmyqlql . html) Your privacy for a dollar or two . "

and . . . . . .

"Let’s get one thing straight: Facebook is forcing users to choose their new privacy options to promote the Everyone update ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/tvbwhvpgmmwkcrzjkbfczkdgsdkwtfsctbvfrtvmjcpzpv_pyh" target="_blank">http: yvjmyqlql . html) and to clear itself of any potential wrongdoing going forward .

If there is significant backlash against the social network, it can claim that users willingly made the choice to share their information with everyone . That’s why there are all of these notifications informing users about what these privacy features do . And it’s why there’s now a Privacy Center .

The vast majority of users will ignore this information the same way 80% of them have ignored privacy settings in the first place . But Facebook will still be able to claim that it did its best to get their informed consent . "

838487 2009-12-10 20:34:00 Given the quality of some of the constituents we are getting, a constitution could be weird at best. At the moment with our erstwhile elected representatives, anything they formulate would make death lose its sting. R2x1 (4628)

Prefect, I'm sure you can have bear arms, bear legs and even bear feet if that is what you have set your little heart on. ;);)
