837839 2009-12-08 21:55:00 SWMBO's Mother has asked me to look at ripping her entire collection of vinyl to a media centre, so can someone recommend me:

- a decent, cheapish USB turntable
- an app that can clean popping etc if necessary, and can encode to FLAC/Ogg etc?

837840 2009-12-08 22:08:00 Dont know about cheap but DSE sell them for 198 and 399. Both of these come with software Speedy Gonzales (78)

837843 2009-12-08 23:54:00 Audacity would be the program to use. roddy_boy (4115)

Audacity is usually the one bundled with the turntables....

Yeah, Audacity is great. My parents use Audacity to do exactly that, they have a massive LP collection, and if they can work it anyone can! Not sure on USB turntables. They run a normal turntable through a stereo to EQ it how they like, the headphones out of the stereo and into the line in on the PC. Quality seems fine.

837846 2009-12-09 06:04:00 Jaycar in Christchurch have USB turntables, I saw them the other day, two models, average probably adequate for the job quality, around $120 as I remember. zqwerty (97)

The 'cheap' USB turntables usually have ceramic cartridges, and el cheapo pre-amps, from what I have read on 78rpm forums.
These would be not as good as magnetic cartridges.

I have also read that with some el cheapos the speeds can be a bit variable, giving a bit of 'wow'.

The LAB 1100 turntable at DSE looks good value for money.

Edit: but it is not USB, so it would just be plugged into your sound card.

837848 2009-12-09 08:34:00 I wonder if you could plug an ordinary turntable with RCA leads into a computer with an RCA to USB adapter.
