837859 2009-12-09 21:19:00 I have a Shure M97XE Mag. Cartridge in my Technics Turntable. I think the cartridge cost about $50 and the stylus (needle) $100.

837860 2009-12-09 22:12:00 Well, lucky old you! :drool

From a memory that is becoming less reliable every day, I could not replace the stylus separate from the cartridge - mine came as an integrated unit.

However, I may be wrong - and I can't recall the make of cartridge (it was a Kenwood deck) so that I can check. It went the way of all tiring things - TradeMe - last year, having not been used for some years. One dead and one retiring cassette deck with a replacement crystal ferrite head went in the same package...

Now one only needs to worry about laser lenses... :crying

837861 2009-12-09 22:20:00 Well, there you go, wrong again. I have tracked things through and find the turntable had a Ortofon FF15XE MK2 Cartridge and it appears as though you can swap stylii. John H (8)
837862 2009-12-10 04:44:00 Well, here's a coincidence, a posting on a 78rpm forum today:

"Vinyl Records and Turntables Are Gaining Sales "

"And with the curious resurgence of vinyl, a parallel revival has emerged: The turntable, once thought to have taken up obsolescence with reel-to-reel and eight-track tape players, has been reborn."

No, not Bakelite, too brittle, but since vinyl seems to be making a comeback, then its great 1930s competitor would be Durium...

837866 2009-12-12 19:49:00 Bakelite would be perfect for Guinness aspirants.

Durium is a known health hazard to those with Super Powers. (There is already a world-wide shortage of Metlas.)

Sorry. That business is on the wane.

Yes why not? You could record in stereo too, and here is the very player designed for cylinders, but you need lots and lots of $$$$$$$$$ to buy one.
