1122778 2010-07-28 13:34:00 Recently, windows would not start and it said, "system32\drivers\pci.sys is missing or faulty. Attempt to repair by using setup cd." Not having the CD at the time I just left it switched off for about 24 hours and on the next attempt it started.

Could be the drive, could be RAM. Could be a dodgy hard drive cable.

You need to run some tests I think to try to figure out the problem...

I'd give Speedfan a run, see if SMART turns up anything bad. Probably run Memtest as well, make sure it wasn't something else.

1122779 2010-07-28 13:48:00 I think we're gonna need some clarification here. I seriously doubt you have a 12 year old 80GB drive.

Well the IBM "Deathstar" 75GXP came out around 2000 so he's not far off the mark...

1122780 2010-07-28 22:44:00 Try a diagnostic utility for your drive, maybe from the vendor. I use the free disk investigator. Or maybe a verification checker for missing/corrupt windows files. I did a boot scan with Avast 5, and interestingly it found a few corrupt files.

Could you please give me a link so I could download and use these programmes. Ta.

How do I run these tests? Do I need to download a programme? If so, could you please send me a link? Ta.

1122783 2010-07-29 00:37:00 try Seatools (google to find it). it will work on most brands, or at least the floopy bootdisk version did.
or just a basic chkdsk /r

"windows would not start and it said, "system32\drivers\pci.sys is missing"
this should tell you it probhably isnt RAM.
Backup your data now (assuming you can get Win going)
Dont trust SMART as a HD diag.
Look for HD errors in Win system logs (assuming you can get Win going)

Backup your data now. Do you really want to trust a 12 year old failing HD ??

1122786 2010-07-30 01:02:00 as for replacing the drive, heres a $99 Hard drive with free shipping

playtech.co.nz

Its a 250GB WD and its supplied from playtech so you can be assured that should you have any problems playtech will promptly reply to your concerns and/or replace it.

If you use acronis true image 2009/2010, it boots from a live disk(CD) and is very easy to use. I'd recommend scaling your first HDD and then copying the data from the second onto it.

If you can't boot anymore to install Speedfan, you could try http://www.hdat2.com/ if you want to see the SMART details.
