Nah! Corona is the Coors of Mexico - and I generally dislike them both since Pilsners which are Bohemian style, are not heady enough for me. I like the Vienna style beers better.

What many people do not know is that Germans who migrated to South American and later moved closer to the US to swim to it, brought with them the best Deutsche lager making processes and they taught it to the indigenous people (Mexican-Indians) and it bloomed from there.

The true beer-introducers to Meso-America originally were the Spanish, who brought the process of using barley in the beer.

From the WIKI:

Beer in Mexico has a long history. While Mesoamerican cultures knew of fermented alcoholic beverages, including a corn beer, long before with Spanish conquest, European style beer brewed with barley was introduced with the Spanish soon after Hernán Cortés’ arrival. Production of this beer here was limited during the colonial period due to the lack of materials and severe restrictions and taxes placed on the product by Spanish authorities.[1] After the Mexican War of Independence, these restrictions disappeared and the industry was permitted to develop.[2] However, it was the arrival of German immigrants and the short-lived empire of Austrian Maximilian I in the 19th century that provided the impetus for the opening of many breweries in various parts of the country. By 1918, there was thirty six brewing companies, but over the 20th century, the industry consolidated until today only two corporations, Grupo Modelo and FEMSA control 90% of the Mexican beer market.[3] This industry is one of the most prevalent in the country with over 63% of the population buying one brand or another. Beer is also a major export for the country, with most going to the United States,[4] but is available in over 150 countries in the world.

My preferences are:

Dos Equis and when I can find it: Tres Equis
Negro Modello
Oso Negro
Carta Blanca
and Montejoand Pacifico or just plain Pacifico.

Strange as it may seem to people who don't know it is that since almost everything in Mexico is state-owned and regulated, that there has been an upswing in some Mexican micro-breweries lately that are not state-controlled and they are kicking out some fine Lagers - one of which reminds me of Dortmunder from Germany. It has the same calcium and iron-water that made the original Export version so popular in both Germany and the limited market it could supply in the rest of the world.

The flavor has s strong "bite" that feels almost pepper-y with a long terroir after taste of licorice.
