| 839716 | 2009-12-20 23:53:00 | I believe New Zealand should strive to be one nation, under one flag, the existing flag- featuring the Union Flag in the top RH corner, because whether we like it or not, and I like it, it was the British heritage of the people that settled New Zealand, brought the land into production, started all the commercial enterprises that hjas made New Zealand the country it is today . My mothers family, my great grandparents , (named Exelby) came to New Zealand from Nawton in North Yorkshire with a young family on the Edwin Fox in 1878, they settled in the Rotokauri area of the Waikato outside what is now Hamilton, and broke in some of what is now the best dairy land in New Zealand . They and thousands of other pioneers made created the foundations of what is modern New Zealands, this was not done by the Hone Haraweras or their anticedents . countless of male members of our family served under the New Zealand flag in World War 1 and World War 2, and the same is true for 10s of thousands on New Zealanders of my generation . we were proud of the New Zealand our Great grandparents, our grand parents and our parents built, and we deplore the changes that are destroying the society and the great little country we grew up in . I made a comment about the payers and the takers, the law abiding and the lawless - this is an unhappily a perception of New Zealand today - it doesn't need to be, but the divisive attitudes building in New Zealand, and snatched and used by opportunistic politicians are slowly creating a society that will destroy our heritage . There is a lot of a mileage made of the injustices inflicted on the early Maori . Well there were injustices by 21st century standard, but by the standards off the early nineteenth society, the New Zealand Maori tribes where treated extraordinarily well, compared to the North American Indian, the Australian Aborigine, or just about every other country that was settled by the ols European Colonial powers . The Maori can thank their lucky stars it was the Britsish, not the Dutch, Spanish,Portuguese, French, Belgians, Germans, or the Italians that claimed New Zealand . In fact the Maori were treated well compared to how the lower social classes were treated in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries - eg Irish Potato Famine, the Highland Clearances, Transportation for minor offences or political discent . It was not exactly a great life being at the bottom of the social order in Europe at those times . So why not give a try to being one nation under one flag, and go forward proud of the heritage that made the country and not dwelling on the negatives from the country's history, and fuelling the divisive elements in NZ society . Its time to kick the grievance industry into touch, along with all of those who have fed on it . |

| 839718 | 2009-12-21 00:29:00 | I too agree with one flag and one Nation. But I fear the grievance industry is never going to go away. Ever! BTW I think that the union flag is in the top left of the current New Zealand flag. |
