1123808 2010-08-02 04:20:00 Just to clarify things, that Link to Adobe that Speedy posted was crashing Firefox 3.6.8 on my machine that runs XP SP2.

My Wife’s machine runs WinME – IE 6.0 and no flashplayer, thanks to the failed update to flashplayer 10.

This is the first time in years that the wife’s machine has given any trouble, WinME and all. :D

Grrrrrrr.

1123809 2010-08-02 04:33:00 Don't suppose you've considered installing one of the trimmer versions of Linux (DSL, Puppy, ...) on your wife's PC & running any of her essential(??) Windows apps under Wine?

Bit of a stretch, I know, but it all depends on what she uses it for. At least you will have a secure platform to run anything on...

That is really annoying isn't it! I don't think there is an answer to the problem either.
Just curious, why do you only have SP2 on your Win XP? I know MS has ceased to support it, but I think you can go and download SP3 from the site manually.

Ahhhh yes, on my machine I did a clean install a couple of years ago, installed SP2 off the disk you could get free from Microsoft, turned off all the updates and have lived happily ever since.

On the other hand my mates religiously did all the updates including SP3 and IE8 and almost brought their machines to a stand still. IE8 was really helpful and stopped them opening photo’s the family sent etc so I think they resolved the situation by installing Firefox and another 1gig of RAM. :D

However, Firefox has been crashing a lot on me lately on various sites and the Adobe one above that Speedy posted a link to is a classic 100% failure.

Seeing fixing wife’s computer seems it’s going to be a mission I’d be interested who uses Firefox and can get on that Adobe site without Firefox crashing. If someone can then it might pay to compare add-ons to see it the problem is one of them.

1123813 2010-08-02 05:58:00 To put back the older versions, go to OldApps (http://www.oldapps.com/) -- All the versions of Fire Fox right back to 0.8 -- and flash player is under utilities / Macromedia wainuitech (129)

Hi B M,

I have just used Speedy's link to FlashPlayer 9 and installed it on my ME machine using IE 6.

It works fine!

On my VISTA PC I got onto that Adobe site no problem.

Well, on my machine I’ve found what was crashing Firefox. :D

It was an add-on called “AVG Safe Search 9.0.0.”

I’ve no idea where it came from, but guess AVG must have installed it without asking.

So thanks LL & Speedy and everyone else for unexpectedly solving that little problem.

I know that wasn’t what the original post was all about so now I’ll go back to Wife’s computer problems.

1123816 2010-08-03 03:46:00 Ok, all sorted and normal transmission resumed. :clap

Wife's computer up and running again on WinME - OE6 & Flashplayer8.

As long as FlashPlayer 8 doesn't decide to try and update to 10 and crash everything again all should be well.

:thanks everyone for your help.
