2010-08-06 03:42:00 | This week I've had 4 or 5 XP SP3 machines that have got the 'windows update bug' again. It was common with XP SP2, clearing software distribution, re-registering a bunch of dll files and installing two updates fixed this. SP3 already includes the hotfix and software (KB927891, windows update agent 3) that used to fix this problem, and rereging every dll I can think of and clearing software distribution doesn't' seem to fix the issues, which consist of svchost and wuauserv using a lot of CPU and ever increasing RAM up to the point the PC becomes unusable, until it's restarted or the BITS and WUAUSERV services are restarted. Has anyone else come across this, or had a proper fix? Cheers.

I'm still seeing it at random on XP machines, one just this morning, wuauserv and svchost were using over 400MB RAM. Clearing software distribution and re-reging all the win update and cryptography .dll files does nothing. Turn auto updates off and rebooted and the problem was gone. | wratterus (105) | ||

2010-08-18 01:55:00 | That sounds like one particular update not installing - do a manual update and see if they all install, or take note of which one doesn't and let us know - there's always ways of sorting these things out. :) | wratterus (105) | |

2010-08-18 02:03:00 | What do you have updates settings as?, automatic? Yeah they are on auto, I can change that but it doesn't change the RAM usage etc unless auto updates are turned right off.

2010-08-18 02:56:00 | My laptop is showing this problem, have to turn off auto updates to use it or else all ram used up and cannot be used, this happened from last month's MS updates I think. | zqwerty (97) | |
