1124944 2010-08-05 22:36:00 I have a 7 SCSI CD drive tower given to me a while ago and finally decided to do something with it, and am going to make it a storage device.
This is what it looks like right now.

Have two ideas in mind:
1. Run an atom board with a SATA raid card for redundancy purposes and 6 sata drives.
2. Or Just have 6 sata drives using one of these each. ascent.co.nz

Opinions please.

Actually, at $76 bucks, I might get one myself for an old server!

Interesting how they only go up to 4 ports, need server class for more!

1124947 2010-08-06 00:07:00 So you think option 1?
Also which raid would be the best to use?
With that card how many raid arrays can I make? Was originally thinking of using Raid 5 with 3 drives on logical drive and the same with the other 3

Do you have to have 6 drives, most mATX are only 4 port and you could use onboard RAID (software)..
However for $76 extra you could have hardware RAID of up to 4 RAID 5 parity and use the onboard for mirror or both RAID 5

1124949 2010-08-06 00:43:00 Well the unit has 7X 5.25" drive slots, and Itx boards seem to only have 2 sata ports nedkelly (9059)

So, you will need the add-on card for 4 of the drives....and wont be able to do all 6 together, or you will have to shell out for an 8 port $650 card!

1124951 2010-08-06 01:40:00 yeah did not think I could have all 6 be one drive nedkelly (9059)
1124952 2010-08-27 01:54:00 Sorry for the bump but thought it would be best to just continue on with the same thread.
I have the board I am going to use now, and want to decide what raid to use for the 4 sata drives on the raid card (when I get it)

1124953 2010-08-27 02:18:00 Raid 5 will give best capacity with fault tolerance so the 4th drive is the parity, so you get 3 x HDD capacity, RAID 10 the best performance with fault tolerance so 2 HDD capacity and RAID 0 the best performance with no fault tolerance SolMiester (139)
