840901 2009-12-18 19:04:00 I see the two girls got 17 years non parole !

Wow - I am always campaigning for tougher sentences and that one is pretty tough by New Zealand standards.

The murder was terrible, and what the girls did was terrible.
But they are very young to go to jail for such a long time.
I just hope that we could start to turn round this gang and dope thing. The girls spent all day smoking. (not much future)
Every young person needs to be working full time.
If not they should be put onto a privately run training course, but make it short sharp and focussed.
And no young girls should be allowed to get the dpb - under any circumstance.
We need to build up the character of our nation !

840903 2009-12-18 19:35:00 I say bring back the death sentence! 17 yrs worth of taxpayers money to keep each of these air stealers in a prison! - now thats a major crime too in my opinion. Fixed in two twos with a $10 piece of rope tied in a noose. And the hanging should be performed by the parents! It's all those PC idiots fault we're seeing this sort of behaviour becoming common! fnphoto (2434)
840904 2009-12-18 20:17:00 17 years not long enough for brutal murder. If I was the family of the VICTIM I would be spewing at the feeble sentence. Minister of justice needs to fire this judge. prefect (6291)
840905 2009-12-18 20:36:00 And then there's the....any mods around?......dickhead....that rang talkback yesterday expressing sadness for these 'poor girls' who as a result of their sentence will find travelling overseas difficult when they're released.

This idiot was making the point that they got a life sentence, not 17 years, and how it's not fair.

Un-friggin-believable. They walk among us.

840906 2009-12-18 20:45:00 They should have got real life sentence (99 years) not NZ life sentence.. paulw (1826)

840909 2009-12-18 21:11:00 Their 'defence' was bull. So what if they had lousy childhood and lousy parents? No excuse to murder a defenceless old man.

Exterminate them and their families, I'd say. Some 10-20 bullets are much cheaper than decades of their leeching and damage to society.

840910 2009-12-20 00:53:00 About the only thing I find really surprising about this awful case is that a judge decided to impose a sentence severe enough to give out a message.
I know! I know! The sentencing laws here deal a cruel blow to the victim and/or family, but that's another story that needs some speedy attention. At least they didn't just get the so-often imposed slap with a wet bus ticket that would send them off laughing.
