In the bad old days lots of those cops in their black and white cars black uniforms would have put the SS to shame. Many were crazed power freaks who couldn't get into the police. The argument is that a policeman shouldn't be behind a radar gun and writing tickets I disagree. Speeders and bastards who don't stop at stop signs, don't indicate before they change lanes are potential murders of my family and me. Not a waste of resources if above scum drivers are out to kill everyone. |

I got my drivers licence in the day when there were Ministry of Transport and local council Traffic Officers, and they were feared because they were focused on their jobs. Sure some were a bit overzealous but on the whole I was more worried about getting a speeding ticket back then than I am now. Heck the traffic police these days are tunnel visioned sissies. I've watched someone blatantly speed through a red light in central Auckland right in front of the policeman that I was alongside. Nary a batted eyelid from the plod! These days it is not uncommon for me to be on the motorway, here in Auckland, to be passed by a mufti police car doing 110kph and talking on his cellphone (This happened just two days ago). No flashing red and blue lights, no siren. If we ever get back to the day when the mere sight of the old black and white patrol car caused fear to strike your heart then I believe that will be a big step forward in traffic safety. |

Lots of Police out there in the last few days doing checks - belts/WOF/Rego/Booze etc. Been four I have seen but only stopped once, as most of them know us school mini-van drivers and mostly get a wave on. Good to see them out there. Ken :2cents: |

| 840348 | 2009-12-17 08:15:00 | the problem with police doing traffic duty is traffic duty gets bumped well down the list of things to do. hence why the government has a "quota" of time they must do. however as cops are well under resourced i cannot see them dropping a murder case to go do traffic duty. also generally police may not know all the fine details of traffic laws. as one ex traffic cops said, every one drives. traffic duty picks up on a lot of other offenses. The argument is that a policeman shouldn't be behind a radar gun and writing tickets I disagree. Speeders and bastards who don't stop at stop signs, don't indicate before they change lanes are potential murders of my family and me. in the last week or so we have had 4 vehicles overtaking around corners, several over no passing lines, not to mention all the usual tailgating, not giving way etc etc. |

If we ever get back to the day when the mere sight of the old black and white patrol car caused fear to strike your heart then I believe that will be a big step forward in traffic safety . I got my various licences back in the old days of separate traffic and police and would agree that while a few were too focused on racking up personal targets, many of us were more afraid of getting a ticket then than many people are now . Was in Auckland recently and on the motorways, I was doing 100 and everyone including police were passing me, 80k area for roadworks and everyone is screaming past us . . . . . including a marked patrol car . . . . . 50k housing area and a marked patrol car was easily pulling away from us . . . . . Yet in WA where I spend some of my time on the road, they seem to be more heavy handed at enforcing the traffic compared to the kiwi coppers, not sure if WA by comparsion has separate Police and Roading enforcement though some patrol cars are branded as Highway Patrol . |
