841743 2009-12-23 05:51:00 2 000 000 sq kilometres bugger all.
Remote outback driving in Australia pretty good test for a car I would have thought.
Just because the yank can do a whole page rant on stuff he knows nothing about doesn't make him an eggspert. What's your measurement?

Um... you "would have thought"?....... I can't recall the last time Australians sent a person to the moon.

You're a so-called Ford fan, right? Note... It was an American, correct me if I'm wrong, who popularised the automobile. Namely the Model T.

Holden and their after casts use the GM name only as a bitter copy to the Ford and other superior vehicles.

841744 2009-12-23 06:32:00 None of this wrangling is helping Beetle to decide what to do, except that the Jeep is definitely a gas guzzler by our standards, and for someone with limited income, even if it is not considered so by the US Dept of Energy or by Joe for whom petrol is still relatively dirt cheap.

Alternative people movers have been mentioned. A few years ago I bought a Jap import 1994 Ford Spectron 7 seater coach, aka Mazda Bongo, 2 litre, petrol manual, not particularly economic, but not too bad. Blanked off the crazy EGR device and got more power and mpg and quieter engine.
Pristine condition for $10000, supposed to have done only 33,000 km.

Normal use is carrying 3 dogs, and carrying gum tree rings for firewood in the back :).
It's moved about 4 years worth of firewood in the past two years........

Something like that I'd have thought would suit Beetle ?

841745 2009-12-23 07:09:00 I still go back to a RAV4 .

2000 cc 4 cylinders

In my case I removed the back seats to make carrying space . I can put them back to carry passengers .

If the Jeep isn't good enough - and that has to be penciled in by her alone for upfront expense, perceived value now, insurance changes and a lot of other personal factors that she may or may not have over the vehicle, then buying a newer vehicle is the best thing if money isn't too tight .

I might buy a Rav4 if I needed one . They are pretty robust here and can make the grade OK for a lot of reasons . They can haul a lot of soccer kiddies too .

Gas mileage is so-so for the size and weight and the power is a little on the low side, but they are a Toyota after all and we don't buy these to race or make economy runs across Route 10 . They are after all, a box on wheels .

We're talking 4-cylinders here, not a V6 or larger . I don't know the engine options in your place - but I imagine they are pretty close to the same-o .

EPA FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS 2009 Toyota Rav4
City 21 ---- Hwy 27 w/2 . 5L/152ci Gas I4 Engine/4-Speed Automatic w/OD trans

There've been a few small recalls that I think are inconsequential really that spread across most years that are currently being reported .

Recall ID # 09E012000 - EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Recall ID # 98E035000 - ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:ANTI-THEFT CONTROLLER
Recall ID # 00V212000 - SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DISC:ROTOR
Recall ID # 00V211000 - POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:PARK/NEUTRAL START SWITCH
Recall ID # 06V096000 - AIR BAGS
And Toyotas have a lot of appeal here as they are tough and reliable, although they have little or no personality as they are all cookie-cutter'ed and the same as another one on the lot .

The only big choice is the color and the side of the car the steering wheel is on as I see it .

They seem to fall off the price charts here in the US once they are used too, so that might be a good thing as a somewhat inexpensive vehicle that requires only small amounts of repair and maintenance money .

Hmmm - on second look, I think they are too high pockets for my money .
Personally after looking at the prices for a used RAV4 compared to the cost in NZ for that vehicle - I think it's very high and too costly even if she wanted one . But that's me .

841746 2009-12-23 07:52:00 Well I have a 1995 RAV with 195,000 km on the clock. It gets a warrant of fitness every time I put it in and the only expense in the time I have had it is for tyres other than the normal grease, oil change and tune up.

Current market value about $NZ5,000.

841747 2009-12-23 07:56:00 That's only about 121,000 miles. Barely broken in and for that year it is very short mileage in comparison.

I guess you really just want to keep that new car smell in it, right?

Nope. All I want is a reliable vehicle that gets me from A to B and B to A when I want to do it.

When I was going to work the 4WD was useful and it still is today. Only last week I pulled a Mazda out of the ditch on the side of the road.

I can't comment as to the Estiema. I don't think I have seen one.

What is wrong with the Jeep you have other than fuel consumption?
If nothing then how far out of town do you get and how often?

Why consider another Jeep if the current one is too thirsty?

Not for me to tell you how to spend your money though.

841751 2009-12-23 09:48:00 I do love the jeep, but its costing me about $60 a week in fuel ( without out of town trips) and i just drive it to work and school .
I seem to be spending more money on repairs and maintenance lately, cost me $900 for tyres alone, and a water pump, a tune / service costs over $600 now, a timing belt ended up costing $300+ and its a 1996 model, built like a tank, just costing a lot . and i need the money elsewhere .

the demio is just too small, i cant cart timber round in it, i couldnt even get grocerys and some plants in it yesterday, and i picked up a TV today and we couldnt fit it and cabinet in as well .

Im at the stage i need to be practical i cant afford 2 vehicles, and i need one to do some of the stuff i want and i think a bit more modern .

so i want to keep the jeep and eat my cake too:p
If money wasnt a problem i would buy a new jeep, but it is, so im trying to cut some of my costs, and the jeep seems to be a bit on the want side not the need side of life .

Well if the Jeep is costing in repairs then it may be time for it to go. Do you need 4WD. If not then a Toyota Corolla station wagon may be the way to go.
