840452 2009-12-17 09:54:00 I would have thought the warranty is on the hardware only. If they can't install windows & want you to do it. Charge them.

They purchased a fully functioning computer, In the event of a failure they can expect to get back a fully functioning computer, Not one that has been half fixed.

840453 2009-12-17 09:59:00 When I was a Computer shop manager a client whom we had sold a HD to failed after being told to back it up. We got a company to try and retrieve the data off of it but was unsuccessful. The client refused to pay the bill which came to a few hundreds of dollars because as he said we had never told him to do a backup. We took him to court and won.

840455 2009-12-17 10:07:00 So an ex computer shop manager is better at giving out information than Roddy is :(

Yes, That is exactly the case.

Which would be a working PC with the replacement drive + OS/Drivers ---- NOTHING more.Anything else is chargeable.

A warranty doesn't cover people being stupid or lazy.

840457 2009-12-17 18:56:00 There is also the question of "Reputation", your good name.I don't doubt that you are good at what you do, that shows on this forum.A bad word always spreads quicker than a good word.

I have been in the same situation, many years ago as a self employed electrician. There is no easy way out I am sorry to say. Go with your conscience and let it go. Life is too short.

PJ

I go along with this.
We have all had them, fix and forget the sods.

Yes .

Normally I do set them up so that they can jump on and do whatever it is they do with them . That is what I offer as part of the purchase price .
Which is why I did all that stuff in the first place .

And normally I would do it again after a situation like this . However, according to the terms of the warranty which I give them, I don't have to do anymore than replace the hardware . Software is not covered .

So I probably will just reinstall it as a standard setup and leave it at that .
I'm not really interested in helping them anymore - paid or not .

840459 2009-12-17 23:22:00 I don't know what sort of guarantee's you give your clients but I don't see how you even have the obligation to do that .

Reputation and goodwill pretty much demand you do it, but unless there's a contract that states it, I don't see how you're actually OBLIGED .

Legally perhaps you may not have an obligation but morally I would feel obliged, as pctek does .

No way would I reinstall anti-virus, anti-spyware and other apps for free, however .

840460 2009-12-17 23:42:00 What the so called "name Brands' do is quite simple -- replace the failed Hardware - HDD in this case - Drop in a original Image, no updates, do additional programs, no data, no setting up -- All that has to be done by the owner. Seen a Compaq few months back - it had Vista SP1 only. wainuitech (129)
840461 2009-12-18 02:53:00 They still don't get it. He rang AGAIN, saying "the technology can't get her stuff back now, but later on it will so I should give the drive back plus a replacement". pctek (84)
