Although I'm not a tech but did manage a computer shop a few years ago, when there HD comes back I would give it back to them and till them to get someone else to sort it out. You don't have tp put with this kind of crap.
:)

Trev and the Moderators,

So an ex computer shop manager is better at giving out information than Roddy is :(

Why wasn't Trev's post either deleted or taken to PM?

Are there double standards at play here?

840443 2009-12-17 04:19:00 Re the networking -- IF you do it, remove all security from the wireless -

Security? What security? Told them that last time too - no, no, they are in the country, they don't need security. Never mind they are 5 mins out of Wyndham and all the young guys and a few others too KNOW these idiots have wide open wireless.

Yes, I am inclined to reinstall Windows, drivers, the usual anti-malwares and basic apps etc and leave it at that.

No doubt she'll scream and threaten, via him of course.

Hope they don't read pressf1. You would be surprised who visits it.

840445 2009-12-17 04:34:00 I wouldnt worry about it, maybe theyl see the support shes getting and realise that shes actually good at what she does and they just need to **** off.

It is suprising what googling someones username can bring up though lol

I wish everyone would. Then this sort of thing wouldn't happen in the first place.

People would learn lots, backup regularly, only buy decent stuff from reliable shops and we'd all have to get jobs selling beads to tourists instead.

I wouldn't bother. Not after the way they (she) have been so rude to you. Windows and drivers is all I would do unless they pay for the rest. You don't owe them anything.

840448 2009-12-17 07:38:00 There is also the question of "Reputation", your good name.I don't doubt that you are good at what you do, that shows on this forum.A bad word always spreads quicker than a good word.

I have been in the same situation, many years ago as a self employed electrician. There is no easy way out I am sorry to say. Go with your conscience and let it go. Life is too short.

Heep smiling & be happy. PJ

840449 2009-12-17 08:03:00 I would have thought the warranty is on the hardware only. If they can't install windows & want you to do it. Charge them. Setting up networks etc isn't part of a normal PC system purchase. I would have thought the only reason software is installed when you buy a PC is for customer convenience. The same as when you buy a new car, it's got a full tank of fuel. Whenever it goes in for a warranty repair they don't fill it up again. Phil B (648)
840450 2009-12-17 09:35:00 Goodluck pctek, sounds like a mission, yip customers are quick to blame, who says they are always right!!

I hate getting stuck at customers places where they want unexpected work done on their pc, minutes turn into hours, Sure you get paid, but sometimes you just want to get out of there. I prefer workshop repairs myself and I try to push for it.
The less time at their place the better.

Once again goodluck, just do the bare essentials, make em pay for any extras.

840451 2009-12-17 09:48:00 You have no obligation to do anything other than replace the hard drive in the computer and reinstall Windows and drivers .

I don't know what sort of guarantee's you give your clients but I don't see how you even have the obligation to do that .

Reputation and goodwill pretty much demand you do it, but unless there's a contract that states it, I don't see how you're actually OBLIGED .

I think I'd have a talk to the man about not appreciating having info relayed and that you'll either talk to him or to her, but that you're too busy to play their games . Depending on how much work you've got going, I might even give them the number of another tech and ask them to be someone elses problem .

Or you could sell them an external drive that auto-backups so you don't have to deal with it in future . Or you could tell them how expensive having info pulled from dead HDD's is .
