According to my GPS map thingee, speed on the GPS was same as speedo or within a k or so of dashboard speed taking into account any GPS lag.

840355 2009-12-20 02:13:00 There again we know that the Police get driving wrong themselves.

Two officers were taken to Tauranga Hospital when their cars collided.

840356 2009-12-20 10:03:00 More cops would be nice; not a police state fashion, but more of a presence. Seen walking on the streets, talking to the community and being a watchful guardian.

The general effect police have on a majority of the public besides stories of police ignoring speeding cars, or them speeding themselves, is amazing on the road. People always slow down when they see them, even if they're going the speed limit :P

840357 2009-12-20 14:04:00 Traffic is a speciality.

It has its own sub speciality's, cviu, scu.

It should be a seperate branch.

The only MAJOR mistake they seem to be making at the moment is to take the power of arrest way from Traffic patrol officers, which is stupid, they need to be able to arrest :

Disqualified driver's, drunks/druggies who fail to accompany, violent offenders, and the other many offenders they will legally stumble upon.

The union was a bad thing, driven by penny pinching.

They need to be their own dept with their OWN budget.

Then we get TRUE road policing.

Then also crime officers get more respect because they are not seen as revenuers which traffic police in this country will allways be, untill all the stupid revenue raseing laws are change.

For far to many years labour govts in particular have treated roads as a "revenue source" and the "road policers" as "revenue gatherers".

Anybody who polices roads will be the publics enemy untill govt changes it stupid "roads as a source of revenue" policys.

These policys are at the core of our road traffic safety problem. Books can be written on the problems caused by these stupid "roads as a source of revenue" policys.

840358 2009-12-20 17:59:00 How stupid the comment about revenue raising from fines, because you can opt out of the revenue gathering by not breaking the traffic laws.
If there was no fine and no possibility of getting caught the driving in NZ would be mega worse.
I would like to see cameras at intersections with stop signs and a $500 fine for not stopping.
There are people around who never stop at a stop sign unless they have to give way I feel like getting out of my vehicle and smashing their face in with a pipe when I see it.

I see the cops in Auckland over the past week extracting Xmas cheer from hapless locals. 3 cops outside the Langholm with a radar gun pointed up Symonds Street, a wide 3 lane road looking for those who may be doinf 61K on a down hill section of road. Wouldn't have mined it if he had stopped the Howick and Eastern bus who went thru the red lite in front of him coming off the Grafton Bridge, or the 5 patrol; cars yesterday afternoon on a MW on ramp in south AK doing WOF and rego checks.. No doubt there will be more of this Xmas cheer over this week as well..

840360 2009-12-20 22:02:00 If people speed in a 30 mph zone they are scum and deserve the fine.
It just means they don't care about running over kids and old people.
Hardly revenue gathering fining scum for speeding and driving unregistered cars and cars with no wof. Good to know on road a car coming at you at 60 mph the steering arms isnt going to fall off and the car veer into your face.

840363 2009-12-21 02:10:00 Re: He wasn't a "Traffic Cop"... he was an school education officer if I remember correctly.

I had a bro-in-law, now deceased, who was a talks in school traffic man. He did one or two evenings a month on the roads with a regular patrol officer and told me that he had a warrant card stating that he was a traffic officer. Had a uniform too, both for patrolling and for talking with the kids. I gathered from him that all of the talks in schools officers were sworn in as some sort of enforcement officer.
