1124606 2010-08-04 06:44:00 If I am running an external hard drive, can I simply pull the power to the drive if I want to remove it, or should I shut the system down before I remove it? Bryan (147)
1124607 2010-08-04 06:46:00 Unless its got an option to remove it, I wouldn't pull the plug. You'll probably corrupt the data Speedy Gonzales (78)
1124608 2010-08-04 06:51:00 If it's a USB External hard drive you stop the service then safely remove.

If running Win XP or 7 then there will probably be an icon on the taskbar on the right hand side.

1124609 2010-08-04 06:55:00 In the system tray (bottom right of screen)
you will see an icon which will say 'Safely remove hardware'
when the mouse pointer is hovered over it.
If you click on it and then click on the external drive in the list it gives,
it will unmount your drive and tell you when you can safely remove it.
If it cannot unmount the drive (if an application is accessing the drive, for instance)
it will tell you that too.

1124610 2010-08-04 08:26:00 Yes you should unmount the filesystem by using the "safely remove" feature first, then you should be able to unplug (depending of course on your connection type, you haven't specified what that is)

If this is not available, then you will need to shut down first.

This also applies to Vista. Whichever OS you have, the icon may be hidden
depending on your customisation. Find "show hidden icons" on taskbar and select the device to remove.
