1125979 2010-08-09 10:20:00 I keep getting this error in DOS on a IBM R40e laptop. I replaced the CMOS battery (CR2032) with another 2 from other working IBM laptops (R50 and Z60t) but I still get the message even after saving the new time and date. If it's not the battery, what is it?

Another problem.. now I'm getting the same message in the working laptop (R50) when I put the battery back in!

a 3rd problem.. now the Z60t won't even start, I'm getting a BSOD on startup with or without it's battery. I restored default settings in CMOS but it still makes no difference. Can removing a CMOS battery damage it?

Now I have 3 screwed laptops, just from changing the battery..

1125980 2010-08-09 10:27:00 What does the BSOD say?? Whats the stop error code? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1125981 2010-08-09 10:52:00 sorry it was a T60, not Z60. Vicx (11114)
1125982 2010-08-09 11:00:00 Is the hdd on this PC thats showing this stop error a SATA hdd?

If it is, (and you didnt install the SATA drivers, when windows was installed), it maybe on AHCI in the BIOS. Go into the BIOS and change it to IDE mode / compatibility mode.

The reason for the crash, . AHCI is enabled in the BIOS, but the SATA drivers for the hdd havent been installed. And when you boot it, since there's no SATA drivers (it cant find the hdd). Result it crashes with that stop error. What version of windows is on it?

1125983 2010-08-09 13:22:00 What Speedy says makes a lot of sense, and could easily be caused by removing the BIOS battery.

Removing the battery clears the settings, which means that the SATA controller will usually default back to AHCI, but was probably set to IDE by whoever initially set it up.

As Speedy says, if you go into the BIOS settings and change the SATA settings back to IDE, that will probably fix the problem.

1125984 2010-08-10 02:07:00 Under SATA I changed it from AHCI to Compatibility and it worked! THANK YOU! you've saved me a lot of stress, I thought this was going to be a write-off.. phew. back in business :) really appreciate the help.
learn something new everyday.

I still have the "CMOS bad" error 0251 message on the other 2 laptops. Google tells me to replace the battery but that hasn't worked.

1125985 2010-08-10 02:33:00 Sweet at least we've fixed 1 prob.

So yup, if you come across that 0x0000007b stop error on any system it'll probably only happen with XP, (since Vista / Win7 have SATA drivers in the install, if you enable AHCI in the BIOS, before you install windows).

Just dont enable AHCI in the BIOS (if its disabled, after you install Vista / Win7). You'll probably get the same stop error

Looks like that 0251 error means replace the battery, but didn't you replace it?? Maybe its flat as well?

If it gives you an option to press F1 (after this error appears), press it, then tsetup (or a menu or something) may appear? If it does, save the settings again. Then see if that error appears again

1125986 2010-08-10 03:08:00 Yeah, test the CMOS battery with a voltmeter or if you dont have one, an LED.

It should show 3 volts or light an LED brightly. If it does neither, then it's stuffed.

1125987 2010-08-10 04:00:00 I've got 2 other working IBM laptops using the exact same battery. I tried both of those batteries and neither of them worked! I put one back to it's original laptop and it works fine! so I'm convinced it's not a battery problem, but that's the error message. I'm stuck, what IS it problem? Vicx (11114)
1125988 2010-08-10 04:03:00 Only other thing it maybe is, its the wrong battery or something? Or something isnt making contact properly? Speedy Gonzales (78)
