1125990 2010-08-09 09:04:00 Hi!
I have a budget Zio V11 modem ( www.hltechnology.com ) and would like to replace it.

I got it as part of the set up package when I signed up with EOL but it has always had a few issues, needs restarting a lot etc.
I could use some advice on what to replace it with. I have my PS3 hardwired in as i find it works better (and it's right next to it) and use the wireless for my laptop and ipod and the Wife's Wii. Does my particular internet set up with EOL, Receiver box thing that points LOS to a transmitter --> DC Injector --> Router, limit my choice or can i buy any type?

I don't have the knowledge to really get stuck in and tweak stuff so a decent, simple, inexpensive and reliable out of the box one would be just the job. There seem to be so many, can anyone recommend one?

Thank you very much

1125991 2010-08-09 20:21:00 Hi Contended,

Welcome to PressF1!

Can EOL not supply you with a new one router if the current is failing? That said, if they've supplied that in the past, you're potentially better off getting your own brand spankin' new one that's of better quality.

Basically what you want is a Linksys WRT54GL, run Tomato on it, or Gargoyle :) Treat it just like you're on a physical Cable connection, not a regular ADSL connection.

The Linksys WRT54GL are widely regarded as high quality, and a "tweakers favorite router" too!

Hope this helps

1125993 2010-08-11 09:36:00 I know that Linksys are manufactured by Cisco which sounds impressive - nothing wrong with that or the gear but I prefer Netgear equipment (have heard less anecdotal issues).

For example: www.netgear.com

1125994 2010-08-16 09:16:00 I have another quick question,do I need a Wireless Router or a Wireless Modem Router? I'm not sure of the difference but I ask because I just got some junk mailers and it has a Linksys WRT120N (router) and a WAG120N (modem Router). Would the differences between the 2 affect me with my EOL or is a simple Router fine?

Thanks very much for the welcome and help btw :)

1125995 2010-08-16 09:31:00 The device will need to include a modem if you are going to connect to the internet unless you are going to use an existing modem. johnd (85)

Would you be able to give us a comparative review between Tomato, Gargoyle and OpenWRT?

Cheers :)

Awesome. But off the top of your head - which one would you use and why?

1125999 2010-08-16 22:36:00 Gargoyle for the per-device reporting, and it works with my OM1P hardware
Tomato is slightly more feature-rich, but most of the crucial stuff is in Gargoyle
Open-WRT is what they're both based off AFAIK
...and I'd never use DD-WRT, unless I was silly enough to buy a device with only 2MB RAM and there was no way I could exchange it for something else :D
