than one with some chance of surviving intact?:illogical
A good software firewall, anti-virus etc. and sensible cruising and I don't see it as being that dangerous without the latest updates.
On my PC Windows XP would run like a dog but PCLinuxOS2010 is sweat. I have tried adding more memory but it is very fussy about what it will accept.

Yep, I’m quite relaxed about running a bare bones system as described by Mike given the fact I’ve never caught a virus or even had a virus alert.

If I were a Bank or similar I’d be a little more careful, but as it stands all these security fixes cause me as much panic as the Y2K bug, Bird Flu, Swine Flu and Global Warming. :D

I agree about security vigilance and sensible browsing. I have just added SP2/SP3 and had no viruses in the past. It's just that software I have installed required Microsoft Net and SP2. Funny thing now getting D com alerts from Avast 5, since installing SP3 (might be notifications of updates). Never had any alerts in the past.

1126512 2010-08-14 04:28:00 Right, I am now installing XP onto PC.
Drivers have loaded and now there is only the option of loading onto C partition as FAT 32 no NTFS choice.
Have I missed something?

1126514 2010-08-15 01:55:00 I have installed XP on computer now and want to load the patch sp37394 which I have downloaded, before I install SP3. It tells me that "my system does not meet the requirements needed".

1126515 2010-08-15 02:06:00 So do I take it this is an HP PC with an AMD processor? Snorkbox (15764)

 LL If it is an HP/Compaq and the install is from a standard XP CD, NOT a recovery CD then the patch is not required.

What happened HP loaded images that were originally made for Intel CPU's onto AMD Computers.

When SP3 goes in Using a HP image/recovery CD it loads it thinking its a Intel -- BUT If you install Windows from fresh using a Normal XP CD, then it loads in the correct software.
